The Student Section | Hokies putting us through a wild rollercoaster of emotions

Senior Days (my pictures are at the bottom of article) are always a little bittersweet because Hokies you’ve come to know and love over the course of at least 4 years are playing their final game at Virginia Tech. Against clemson on Sunday we had a chance to have a pretty sweet day. With virginia’s stunning loss at wake forest the Hokies had a shot at the ACC regular season championship and the top seed in the ACC tournament. The day was not so sweet and I left Cassell Coliseum with a pretty bitter feeling about the end of our seniors’ careers.

Sunday’s game was full of emotion. The alumni almost completely filled their section of the Cassell and the students’ attendance exceeded my expectations considering it was the beginning of spring break. The crowd was loud for much of the game even when the Hokies fell down big early. The emotion was exciting to see, but maybe there was too much excitement.

One of my fellow Hokie students, that’s been up and down the roads of Virginia over the past few days to see Tech play in their last two games, said before the game that he feared, with it being senior day, that Tech would come out wanting to win too bad, and play too hard. We always talk about teams not wanting it or not playing hard enough, but I think in this case what my friend said was correct. Zabian Dowdell came out full of emotion, and had a great game, scoring 25 points, but Zabes had seven turnovers, at least four of which came in the first few minutes of the game – an obvious example of trying to force the Hokies to a win and a big game for himself. Who can blame him though?

Fortunately for our five seniors it wasn’t their last game, and the Hokies have still had a great season. Capturing one of the top four seeds in the ACC tournament is a great accomplishment. It hurts to know that after uva’s loss we had an excellent shot at taking the cake and didn’t do it. Although, the real ACC Champion is determined by the tournament, so we do still have a legitimate shot at the title, just like all 12 other ACC teams. What a rollercoaster this season has been for the Hokies, and the rest of the ACC.

Who thought we’d be third in the ACC after the loss at marshall on December 31? Who would have thought we’d win all three games against duke and unc? Who would have thought we’d get swept by n.c. state? I could go on and on. This season has obviously been up and then down; right now I’d say we’re at the bottom of a stomach sinking down on our rollercoaster season. That means we’ve got to be headed back up soon right? After Sunday’s loss at home to clemson I’d say we’re due for an upward swing.

I love our senior class and wouldn’t have missed Sunday’s game for anything. It hurt bad to see Coleman, Jamon, Marcus, Chris and Zabian go out like that, but it will hurt more to see us fail to bounce back from our rough end to the season. The Hokies are just 5-5 in their last ten games, not a good record going into the tournaments. I’m thrilled that we’re a lock for the NCAA tournament, but after such promising victories over unc, duke, maryland, bc and uva it would be hard to watch us fall out before the Sweet Sixteen.

Even though the rollercoaster is giving us a stomachache right now, we need to stick it out, – even though by the end we may be puking, figuratively…or not. Hang on tight Hokies.

Q’s favorite Virginia Tech basketball memory is his own graceful leap over the ridiculously tall wall behind the basket as time expired after this season’s unc game, but Deron Washington’s leap over Greg Paulus at duke is a close second. Q considers himself lucky that he was rejected by uva three years ago.
