TechHoops.com would like to welcome the Cassell Crusader, a new member of TechHoops.com’s Student Section, where students voice their opinions on Virgina Tech basketball.
The Cassell Crusader is running the Student Government Assocation (SGA) sponsored “Hokies on Fire†Campaign to boost student spirit at home games and hopefully set some new traditions for VT Basketball. Click here to read more about the Cassell Crusader.
The “Hokies on Fire” SGA Program was created in the hope that we can mirror the success of the Hokie Effect football campaign. Hokies on Fire started out that way, but I hope it will become so much bigger than that. Our objective for this program is to dramatically increase awareness that Virginia Tech IS a basketball school.
Virginia Tech basketball needs to be on student calendars. Home games CANNOT be an afterthought. The sale of t-shirts, campus posters, and reminders about upcoming games will increase overall awareness of Hokie basketball within the student body.
The next step is to ensure that when people show up for home games, they are amazed with the atmosphere of Cassell Coliseum. It is a fact that the intensity of the student fans has literally changed the outcome of games. Cassell may be smaller than Lane, but that doesn’t mean it should not be as loud.
It is time to show Virginia Tech and the country that the students are behind their basketball team. Opposing teams will dread the trip to Virginia Tech, knowing that Cassell Coliseum is one of the toughest arenas in the ACC.
100% of the proceeds from t-shirt sales will benefit the American Red Cross’ relief efforts for the Southern California wildfires. We are calling our effort “Fighting Fire with Fire”. The shirts will be on sale on Friday, November 9, just in time for the Hokies’ home opener vs. Elon. T-shirts will cost $7, available at University Bookstore, Volume Two Bookstore, Dietrick General Store, HokieShop Stadium Stores, and in Cassell at the new Coliseum Shop.
We have picked the duke game on January 24th as the men’s basketball “Hokies on Fire” game. For that game we hope to get everyone in attendance to wear the Hokies on Fire shirt. This game is scheduled to be nationally televised on ESPN, and is a huge game for us. The day before that game we hope to put on a pep rally with food, giveaways, performances by student groups. The women’s “Hokies on Fire” game will be February 4th versus maryland.
We have formed a committee to see what other directions we could take this program. Some ideas we have had is to hold a “Storm the Cassell” rally that would be held on Dietrick lawn an hour before the game. The rally would be to help pump up the fans and to make sure people are making it to the game on time. The committee is also charged with the responsibility of trying to set new traditions, making new cheers, and giving each home game a unique experience.
