Good points. With Deron, I upgraded him a bit due to his leadership and how clutch he's been at the end of games. And he's been getting to the line a ton, which is what he needs to do. Plus, I really like those dunks :-)

It sounds like Wick wants to grade on a curve given the fact that most of our players are freshmen and have played past expectations, but Niemo wants to grade the players straight up compared to their counterparts all across the ACC. I've got to go with Niemo on this one... maybe it's harsh, but what grades would Duke's freshmen get? UNC's? I think if we want to be a mainstay in the ACC then we have to look at our players through the same microscope we use against our opponents. I think we can all agree that the 2nd half of the season is going to be as exciting as we've ever had at VT and these young players continue to get better on a weekly basis. Thorns was getting ripped for his defense earlier in the year, and look at him now! You have to hand it to Greenberg (an obvious choice for ACC COY at this point), he gets every one of his players to play team defense. The only grade I would have changed is Deron's... I think he was a B last year, but has regressed to a C+ this year. His shooting percentage isn't just bad, it's atrocious. And his flops have given almost as many easy looks at the basket as they've created turnovers. I am hoping he can put it together in the 2nd half of ACC play because right now I'm not sure that we wouldn't be better off giving Terrell Bell his minutes.

Don't listen to them, Niemo. I think you are dead on balls accurate (It's a industry term) with your grades. Especially on the ffense, I purposely took out the O. The fact that don't do the basics in attacking a zone, penetrate and dish, is beyond me. That is so frustrating. When A.D. is not in the game there is no one running through the lane without the ball. Too much standing around. I'm done, starting to get angry again.

As I look at the rest of the season, The one thing in Hokies' favor is that we have the many home games (we migh have the most home games of any team in the conference)...

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/teams/vah/schedule;_ylt=AgOiHyG8fS.8ZNWK.Ee_.ywK1LYF

We only have 3 of the final 8 on the road. And our home games (Miami, Georgia Tech, Boston Collge, and Wake Forest) are very winnable... if we can steal one more on the road, like at Maryland, well, then know knows, Wick... and these young Hokies have done pretty darn well on the road... I'm excited about the 2nd half of the Atlantic Coast Conference season... should be a great ride.

Can you read Niemo? Did I write that everyone should have an A? You were at the elon game; this team has come a long ways since then, even since the beginning of January. You can't be giving out grades for a below average offense for years. You are always talking about W and Ls in football. Thats what it comes down to in the end, and thus I would give a bit higher grades across the board because of that.

vatechhokies50 - Yea, I doubt the big dance will happen, but it is nice to even be thinking about it. You do get credit for being the first on the NIT bandwagon.

If I gave everyone A's now, what would I give them as they actually got better? Yeesh. If you want people blowing sunshine up your butt, go to Starbuck's, or have Daveywoods write these things. You know he'd give everyone an 'A'. I guarantee Greenberg's grades for the guys would be this brutally honest. Last year, Zabian deserved an A+ and Gordon would have gotten an A. I don't see anyone on this year's team that is playing at that level.Â

If you think about it, Allen had 2 "incompletes". Wouldn't that pull your grade down a full letter?

I agree, Greenberg gets an A and has to be the mid-season leader for COY.

Have you watched our offense? The shooting is awful from long range other than Vassallo, sometimes Delaney. And there's just no flow. The reason I gave it a D+ is this is something that has been a problem for years, so I don't just pin it on the Baby Hokies. I also don't expect to see it improve any time soon. And we still can't consistently hit free throws.

That said, 5-3 completely blew away my expectations, especially the 2-2 on the road. This team is a year ahead of where they should be. Kinda reminds me of the movie Major League. A bunch of scrappy young kids that don't know how hard this is supposed to be and some veterans that no one else really wanted. Yet they are taking it to everyone in the best conference in the country.

Wick,

Book it?

Even I'm not on that bandwagon yet for the Hokies to make the NCAA tournament (and I am driving the car for the Hokies postseason opportunities... I've driven that car on this site the entire season)... according to Joe Lenardi, ESPN Bracketology exprt, the Atlantic Cost Conference is a 3-4 bid league this year:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/bracketology

I think that we have to be 11-5 (minimum) in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play and have to win a game or two at the ACC tournament... the bottom line is that we need to the magic number of 20 wins on our resume to get to the NCAA tournment (and to make up for those losses against richmond and old dominion). I'm aware that there are teams in the past that have not won 20 games and made it to the tournament (Temple comes to mind), but this is not that year... 20 or more wins gets you in to the dance.

The NCAA will look at how Virginia Tech plays during the conference season and also focuses on the 2nd half of the season and we need to close strongly.

Having said all that, I'm still the driver for the NIT.

Niemo,

Wick's right... you are a bit harsh... these guys are freshman... we were picked 10th in the ACC and these young guys are still learning their roles... it takes a lot for freshmen to adjust to ACC play... for example, DeLaney has to learn two positions and that is lot to expect for a freshman...

http://www.roanoke.com/sports/vtbasketball/wb/149264

DeLaney has an A in my book... I agree with Wick on his grades for Hudson, Allen, and the offense... and Greenberg has done an amazing job.

You must have gone to Abby's Bar and Grill in Blacksburg for the $1.25 Bud Light bottles (still a very good deal... and a hole in the wall restaurant... on football or basketball game day, the wait is short). I know you can't get that kind of a deal in Northern Virginia :-)

You must be related to my Accounting professor who never graded on a curve; or you need to stop writing columns when you are hungover.

Way too harsh, my friend. These guys were picked 10th in the league and now they are third! Not to mention, they play 6 freshman on a regular basis. Hudson does not deserve a D; yes he has been tentative the last few games, but given the guy first joined the team in December, a D is way too harsh. How about a C+? Allen deserves an A, and would have received an A+ if it wasn't for the suspension.

I agree that the offense has struggled, but I would give them a C+, again because this team has execeeded everyone's expectations.

You forgot one grade - Coach Greenberg, who in my mind gets an A+. ACC COY again, if he keeps it up.

The magic number is 5. This team needs 5 more ACC wins (regular season or tourney) to make the big dance. Book It.

Allen deserves an A, and would have received an A+ if it wasn’t for the suspension.

I agree that the offense has struggled, but I would give them a C+, again because this team has execeeded everyone’s expectations.

You forgot one grade – Coach Greenberg, who in my mind gets an A+. ACC COY again, if he keeps it up.
