Niemo’s Notes | Don’t Say “Bye” Yet

  • With miami’s win on Wednesday night, the Hokies have not yet clinched a bye in the First Round of the ACC Tournament next week. The canes scored just 20 first half points, and fell behind by as many as 11 in the second half before pouring in 54 second half points and waxing the eagles 74-61. The eagles blow leads like Jenna Jameson… well, you get the idea (bc blew an 18 point lead at home against unc on Saturday).
  • miami plays at rival fsu on Saturday at noon, ie: Senior Day for the noles. So expect a quality effort from them despite sitting in 8th place. If fsu wins, VT has their bye.
  • If miami wins at fsu on Saturday, Virginia Tech must beat clemson to get a bye. The Hokies will finish 3rd if they win Sunday’s game no matter what. If they lose and miami wins, Tech finishes 5th and will face [gulp] nc state in the First Round of the ACC Tourney if state loses to wake this weekend. bc and uva are also in contention for the bottom spot in that order.
  • Just to add to the drama Sunday, I predict the Hokies must win this game to make the NCAA Tournament. Tech is 0-5 against RPI Top 50 teams (butler, gonzaga, duke, miami, and unc). butler is the only game VT had a really good shot of winning, with Jeff Allen missing a free throw with the game tied late in regulation. Yes, the miami game was close, but miami led the entire second half. A win, on the road, against a Top 25 team in clemson would really boost Tech’s RPI and give them a big time quality win (maryland’s loss to clemson hurt).
  • You have to tip your hat to the canes if they end up getting a bye. As hot as the Hokies have been of late, the canes have been even hotter. Since hitting the midpoint of the ACC slate at 2-6, the canes have gone 6-1. Only unc has been that good in the second half. The Hokies are 4-3 so far and duke is 5-2.
  • With the win over wake, the Hokies finished the ACC home schedule with a 6-2 record. They were also 6-2 in 2004-05 and 2006-07. Tech was just 2-6 in the painful 2005-06 season.
  • Check out Virginia Tech’s very odd trend in ACC play: lose 1, win 2, lose 2, win 3, lose 3, win 4… I guess the good news is VT doesn’t have four ACC games left.
  • With a win Sunday, the Hokies will be at .500 in ACC regular season play since joining the ACC. Tech is currently 31-32.
  • While waiting to board a flight today, I went to get McDonald’s. After ordering, two of the cooks put each other in headlocks and starting punching each other for several minutes. It looked like a hockey game broke out and all the customers just stood around watching like it was a show. Eventually cops came in and arrested the guys. I never got my food or my money back (glad I didn’t order the McFilet Mignon). Word has it they were fighting over who got to make my delicious Snack Wrap. Why am I telling you this… hmm… I guess it symbolized the way VT and miami are battling it out for a bye? Yeah, that’s it.
  • Seriously, Jerry Jones gets less face time during Cowboy games than Deron’s mom during Hokie games. And I think ESPN just takes Deron’s highlight of the night and throws it in the #1 spot on the SportsCenter Top 10.
  • Speaking of ESPN, the ultimate highlight competition was a joke. Another example of how they are turning into Candy Land (ie: make believe). The boise state play was #2 all time? Are you kidding me? No way that is better than Gibson’s HR, or Buckner’s error, or flutie’s Hail Mary, or “THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!” And the Eruzione goal, which won, isn’t the real highlight of that game. The ultimate highlight is Al Michaels saying, “Five seconds left… Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, democracy doesn’t work, at least on this stuff. People vote for now, not what was. Speaking of the Washington’s (stay with me)…
  • I thought the sign the Washington’s made on Tuesday was really classy. Deron and his mom (and Marcus Travis) will be missed… next year. We’ve still got work to do.

Anybody but nc state in the tournament. I refuse to write a fifth nc state recap if this happens. I am the jinx.

Niemo – If you mention buckner’s error on this site again, I will take away your media credentials.

That’s not really drama… I predicted a couple of weeks ago that the Hokies had to win this game… we need to win this again AND a game or two in the ACC tournament, guys… we need 20 wins… what is cool, though, is that clemson LOST TO georgia tech tonight.. we are in a tie for third place!!

If we win against Clemson on Sunday, the win would have looked better had they not lost to Georgia Tech… this’ll drop their RPI a little bit. I think if we win against Clemson, we probably won’t need a win in the ACC tourney to get into the NCAA tourney. I think we’d be on the bubble, but one of the more solid bubble choices. Clemson gives us the top 25 RPI win (assuming they don’t fall too far) that we’ve needed on our resume to go with the fact that we have no bad losses. I think we need 2 ACC tourney wins if we lose to Clemson though.

You are right on, goodraisin. The only thing that could change our outlook is if the twerps and canes bow out in the first round of the ACC and we win our first round game. Regardless, win Sunday and I think we are in too.
