Here’s a nice article about Virginia Tech 2009 signee, Erick Green. It talks about his adjustment to life at Paul VI, a private high school in Fairfax, VA. It also mentions he has added 15 pounds of muscle since last season.

Niemo is a member of the VT Class of '98.
Attended every home basketball game during his 4 years at VT after missing the first home game. Has attended 116 straight VT football home games (every game since '94), eclipsing the 100 mark in September of '09.
During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver.
Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.
Niemo currently lives in DC and speaks the Hokie gospel as often as possible. He watches over 50% of all ACC games, making him one of the most knowledgeable experts on ACC basketball.

Erick Green is a nice PG recruit… I think he’s going to be essential to the Hokies next year and the year after… we should be able to ease him in as a freshman next year and may even be able to move Delaney over to SG for his senior season if Hudson turns out to be a bust (which it’s looking more and more like that will be the case). I like the options he presents, and the year at Paul VI will be essential to his growth as a player.
Yeah, anything that gives Delaney help we will all be in favor of.
By the way Niemo, I wasn’t aware there’s another Curry. How did Seth Curry end up at Liberty? It’s hard to believe the road that has led us to Hank Thorns being our “true” point guard.
I agree. I think he is vital to next year. I see Erick and Malcolm playing together a lot, almost as co-PGs. It is hard to have a true freshman point guard, so having Delaney on the court at the same time could ease some of the transition. Right now Thorns and Delaney are the only true ballhandlers VT has.
I expect Green to eat up some of Thorns’s minutes. Thorns is a decent player, but his offensive game has not progressed much. He’s looked better of late but I’m not sure he’ll ever be what VT needs. And Hudson has a ways to go, too.
John – Yes, there is another Curry that will get rubbed in our face for quite a while. Seth was a 2-3 star guard in last year’s class. Same story as his bro – considered too skinny to play major college ball.
I don’t give Greenberg a hard time about either one. With Stephen, NO ONE big time offered him. Seth tried to find a way to get him to VT – redshirt/walk-on his freshman year and then see what happens. Stephen chose to go to a school that wanted him right then and would give him a full ride. To be honest, Stephen would have had almost no chance to play his freshman year at VT. Tech had Gordon and Dowdell logging 30+ minutes per game and had Munson as the more highly touted recruit. No way he would have burst on the scene like he did at davidson. He made the right choice for him. Now, his sophomore year (or r-Fr year), he may have exploded but we will never know.
With Seth Curry, similar story – NO ONE offered him from a big time conference. I.E. No one learned their lesson the first time. And though he is scoring very well right now, the verdict is still out on him to see how he will compare to his brother. He played very well in a victory against uva, but then again uva isn’t much of a team this year.
One final thought – Greenberg is a defense-first coach. He recruits kids that are athletic and physical other than a few exceptions (Krabbendam, Swindle, Thorns – but he was more of a last minute need at guard). The Curry’s are not known for their defense, and their lack of bulk would have worked against fitting into Seth’s system. Even their father, who is still Tech’s all time steals leader, gambled a lot on D. Had both these kids had any last name other Curry (or Coles), no one would even think twice about why they aren’t at VT.
That said, would I love to have Stephen? Of course. We are thin at guard for now. Next year that should start to change.
