Sorry Cope, I was trying to make sense of the game by the small amount I heard on the radio and the play-by-play of the game on Hokiesports. Even Hokies All-Access is letting me down... it wasn't possible to view the game on there. At any rate, I think Niemo makes a really good point, and the point is that VT needs to play to whatever the other team is giving us when we have the lead, rather than always forcing what we want to do. I realize now that this isn't what happened last night for a long stretch, but hear me out.

Slowing down the tempo is good when the other team is gifted at running and is pushing to run, so it made sense for much of last night. I just can't stand possessions where we try to slow the game down by dribbling around until late in the shot clock, then starting our offense and getting nothing out of holding the ball. To me, slowing the game down means being cautious and waiting until we find a good shot. So you can shoot early in the shot clock if a high-percentage shot is there. But I feel like, too often, our definition of slowing the game down is swinging the ball around the 3-point line until there is 10 seconds left, then forcing up a bad 3-pointer with a hand in our face or a 2-point jumper where we're floating away from the basket. I want to see us continue to do the same things on offense that have helped us to build the big lead.

I think us getting points in transition is a must since we aren't great in the half court set, but to your point, Cope, we can't get sucked into up-tempo games and that tends to happen when we force transition opportunities. That's what unc did to us in the 2nd half and we gave up a lot of easy buckets.

My feeling is we need a mix of both: we play much better defense in the half court when we limit teams' transition chances, but we also have to push the ball when we can, especially since that is when guys like Hudson or Thompson are at their best. Just can't do it for long bursts. When we go too much towards either extreme, that's when we have those dry spells or start giving up points like a sieve.

Goodraisin - I would disagree with your analysis of last night's game. The Hokies played ball-control offense and that's what gave them their big lead, but in the second half, they weren't being patient and were trying to run-and-gun and play an up-tempo style and that's what hurt them. They are better when they slow the game down and control the ball. Niemo can speak about this better than I can, but that was my observation at the game last night.

I'm not so sure how good this game will look for March. Much like us, Miami hasn't really beat any good teams this season up to this point. Their best win is easily their one point win over Wake Forest. They also have two mediocre wins against Minnesota and South Carolina. Miami could end up getting thumped in the ACC (where they have already lost to Boston College), and this game will end up meaning next to nothing. With that said, I thought our domination in the first half was a really good sign and even though we let Miami come back in the last 21 minutes of the game, we rallied late to get our lead back up. I think that our teams under Greenberg have historically been bad with big leads. They try to milk the clock on each possession, but in doing so, we often don't get good looks at the basket.

If this team could ever get to where they can play two halves back-to-back like they played the first halves of both the UNC and Miami games, I honestly think we'd have just about as good a chance as anyone else of winning the ACC this year. When our team is on their game, they're pretty damn good.

This was a very nice win that will look good to the NCAA tournament selection committee in March. Now it's time to head down to Tallahassee and see if we can steal one on Saturday!
