Rock bottom definitely came at the hands of Petersburg, as GW allowed a team to come into Danville and blast them by 19 points. It was really bizarre to see CJ and the preseason #1 Eagles get manhandled by a team that ended up sitting at #1 when the game actually happened… an interesting twist since the game was orignally supposed to be played when it was GW that was #1 and when they still had their point guard healthy and runnin’ thangs.

Nevertheless, the rocking at the hands of the Crimson Wave seemed to at least spark something, as 3 days later the Eagles took out the Western Valley District’s leader Patrick Henry (Roanoke), handing the Patriots their first district loss. While improving to 9-5 and 2-3 in the district isn’t anything at all to celebrate in a typical GW season, this was an important step.

GW has struggled all season to learn to play without Jerail Howerton, their point guard that they lost in their Christmas Holiday Shootout tournament just after Santa came to town. In the past two games, though, while they still have not had their offense clicking like it did when Jerail was running the show, they have gotten back to winning ways and we all know that winning cures most every problem.

With 3 crucial district games remaining (to be played across a brutal 5-day span following the havoc that the weather has wreaked), hopefully GW can continue to move in the right direction heading into the district and (hopefully) regional tournaments. At this point, they’re going to need to win the district tourney to make the regionals, as only 2 teams make it and Patrick Henry has all but wrapped up the regular season title.
