Recruiting Note: Tyrone Garland became just the fifth person in Philly Public School history to eclipse the 2,000 point mark – Article – Tyrone should easily move into third place all-time on the Philly list and has a shot at Wilt Chamberlin, who is #2 with 2,206 points. Fellow signee Jarell Eddie also surpassed 2,000 points (last year) for his NC school.
Notes from Monday’s show with Seth Greenberg:
- Seth ate a good chocolate chip cookie (let’s hope it wasn’t spiked with a laxative).
- Seth on the win over uva: VT came from behind but controlled most of the game led by several key stops at the end, including guarding their elevator play; game reflected who we are as VT continues to make plays and scored on their final 7 possessions (so good when it matters).
- Seth on the ncsu win: VT did a good job cutting hard and executing in transition; Hudson got the offense going with two early threes; VT did a good job doubling Smith for ncsu; Tech did a good job setting screens.
- Seth: Tech puts a lot of time into this and that is why they are winning – Delaney and Hudson were out there 30 minutes before the shoot-around getting ready, Jeff was out there early for warm-ups, they are putting in the extra effort.
- Seth on practice yesterday and today: Today had to take care of things off the court, but did film and work yesterday for the game tomorrow against wake, walked through wake’s sets and ball-screens; today had a good practice with David Jackson timing.
- Seth on Malcolm Leaning back on misses: Caller is watching too closely, he shoots 85%.
- Seth on not calling fouls for Malcolm: Malcolm has to just play. Take pride in what you do well like passing and defense or knocking the ball away and coming up with a 50/50 ball and is important to Seth. Control what you can control.
- Seth on the freshmen progressing: Nothing has been frustrating – Raines gives a physical presence, Green is getting better and called “bank” on that 3 (I sensed sarcasm) and is handling the ball better, Boggs is playing good defense.
- Do we track where FTs in practice were missed – don’t chart that, just how many it takes to reach 100 makes but his golf shot goes left, he knows that, and there were a lot of tee times available at the River Course today [guess people don't have the glowing orange balls]
- Tyrone Garland, a VT signee, is the 5th all time leading scorer in Philly public school history. Hit 2000th point to join Jarell Eddie in that class. Wilt Chamberlin is on that Philly list, as is Gerald Henderson. Needs 200 to catch Wilt.
- Seth on Tyrone – is a Philly guard – a feel for playing; unselfish in AAU games, good off the ball-screen, changes speeds well.
- On Lunardi having VT as a #11 seed: Joe is smart, he was the first bracketologist and was ahead of his time on how the committee thinks; Seth gets a kick out of this because only 4 or 5 are in right now and the rest have work to do; it is just an opinion with 27 days to go; give’em credit for figuring out a way to make cash; who are you, Jerry Palm? [Palm is CBS's guy who has the Hokies out of the tournament]
- On Allen’s Dunk: Great dunk, Jeff got that big old body off the ground and it was sick. Proud of how Jeff rebounded after sitting the final 18 minutes of the first half after getting 2 quick fouls but cheered on teammates and played great and handled himself well in the second half. Showed his maturity and leadership.
- JT is unbelievable guarding big games and uses angles – low man wins – put JT on Scott to keep Allen out of foul trouble. Plays bigger than he is and has embraced 6th man role.
- Will NCAA Tournament expand? Not sure unless ESPN gets the rights and then they can sell it because they can carry that many games. Would have to create more revenue streams – coaches and Bill Roth are for it.
- Seth is not going to coach the new jersey nets
On wake:
- Seth on wake: need to get back on Aminu, Ish Smith plays 8 zillion minutes so can’t look at minutes in conference play. They have a veteran group (Williams and Smith and McFarland and Weaver are seniors).
- Guards need to rebound well against wake and bigs need to keep the wake bigs off the boards.
- 14 times a wake player has fouled out but 0 opponents have.
- wake is aggressive, Chas McFarland is aggressive and will foul but Seth likes him. Is huge and can run and has good hands.
- How can you slow Ish Smith down? He is good on the high pick and roll and can split you. When you help, their bigs have angles to rebound.
- Have 5 of 6 different angles on ball-screens and Smith will use bigs in transition to rub players off like Steve Nash. Use angles.
- Tech has had success against the deacs because they have made shots against them since Chris Paul left. Dynamics for some teams are tough with certain match-ups.
- Game is #600 in Seth’s career as a head coach. A lot of head rubs, veins. 217th game at VT and Seth is the second-winningest coach.
- Need a great crowd Tuesday and a letter to the students will be in the paper, one of the toughest places to play. Crowd has brought team back; deafening the other night and crowd gets the assist.
On duke:
- Great venue that loves Uncle Fester
- Terrific players in Scheyer, Smith, Singler and Plumlee brothers are playing well.
- Scheyer is efficient.
- One of the most complete teams in the country.
- More worried about Ish Smith.
Top 5 wins in Seth Greenberg Era at VT:
- 2007 win at duke on Deron’s block at the end and his “teabag” over Paulus.
- 2007 over #1 unc at home with huge run to go up over 20 and held off late rally.
- 2005 win over duke at home after losing by 35 at duke on 4000 FTs but Jeff King and Zabian Dowdell pull them to a win.
- 2007 win over illinois in First Round of NCAA Tourney by coming back at the end, 1 FG in last 6 minutes. Tech was down 11 at final media timeout.
- 2005 win over clemson for first ACC win on Carlos Dixon steal.
- Honorable Mention – at rutgers – gave up 34-0 run in first game but beat them in next meeting and made Big East Tourney, win over #1 wake, win at wake in 2005-06 year with all the tragedies.
Didn’t have win at unc in 2007 when unc was #5 to sweep unc.
