Raines Out For Season

Deja vu anyone? Are we all suddenly cast in Groundhog Day and it is 2005-06 all over again (minus the tragedies)? It keeps going from bad to worse. The Hokies also announced that Cadarian Raines will be out for the rest of the season, an like Dorenzo, can apply for a Medical Hardship (not redshirt) and should receive one. Since he’s only played in 4 games, all of which were in the first half of the season, Cadarian should be fine assuming he can get the required medical documentation. Raines could have played in up to 9 games (30% of 30 games).

This obviously creates a huge whole down low. Tech has just two active low post players now – Allen and Davila. And VT is down to 8 scholarship players with JT Thompson, Chaney, Hudson, and Raines out for the year, and Boggs transferring.

Expect to see Terrell Bell move down low (like Deron used to) when Allen or Davila need a break. Eddie and Atkins can provide help at the 3, and may have to help inside, too, in a pinch. Tyrone Garland is the only other bench scholarship guy, and he’ll rest Green at the point. Marcus Davis – come on down!

For more on the impact of Hudson’s and Raines’s injuries on recruiting and next season, read the Hudson article (the last posted article).

Niemo is a member of the VT Class of '98. Attended every home basketball game during his 4 years at VT after missing the first home game. Has attended 122 straight VT football home games (every game since '94), eclipsing the 100 mark in September of '09. During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo. Niemo currently lives in DC and speaks the Hokie gospel as often as possible. He watches over 50% of all ACC games, making him one of the most knowledgeable experts on ACC basketball.

I do feel bad for Delaney, Bell and Allen who will likely never get to play an NCAA tournament game.

Is Marcus Davis a legit option for VT hoops? Can someone comment on his experience and talent level? Any other options from the football team? Thanks!

Steve – I doubt you can expect much in actual games, but it will give us another practice body which is key. If you read Greenberg’s quotes after yesterday’s game, he talks about how much not having two full teams to practice with hurts them.
