Here is a great article from Sports Illustrated on Zabian Dowdell’s life and his 10 day contract with the Phoenix Suns:

Highlights:

  • Dowdell wrote a letter to himself when he was in high school saying he was going to make the NBA… he did.
  • He wore #22 with the Suns to honor Jamon Gordon (playing in Greece).
  • The Suns claim he’ll get another shot when they get home from their road trip… well, they are back home tonight and he hasn’t been resigned yet.

Niemo is a member of the VT Class of '98. Attended every home basketball game during his 4 years at VT after missing the first home game. Has attended 122 straight VT football home games (every game since '94), eclipsing the 100 mark in September of '09. During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo. Niemo currently lives in DC and speaks the Hokie gospel as often as possible. He watches over 50% of all ACC games, making him one of the most knowledgeable experts on ACC basketball.

    Thanks for this…this is a must read for any Hokie whether you follow basketball or not. Aside from being one of the best guards VT has ever had, he was part of Seth’s first teams that made us relevant in the Big East and then competitive in the ACC, when everyone thought we’d never compete. Dowdell’s performance at Carolina that night when we beat them by 1 in OT is one I’ll always remember.

    Great Story. He’s right there, with his fingernails digging into the cliff edge. I hope he gets another 10 day contract. He deserves it.

    Just read on NBA channel ticker that Dowdell was signed to another 10 day contract today. He deserves it! I hope he can stick for the rest of the year.

    Niemo – thanks for sharing the article. I watched the whole blowout just so I could watch Z. Really rooting for him as he is definitely one of the good guys. I’d like to see him play the next 10 years in the league, then come back and coach at VT.
