Recruiting News | 2011 Signee Progress Report

Don’t forget to check out our 2011 Recruit News and Game Stats Page (Link) that has the score and stats for the four VT signees for 2011 for almost every Norcom and Hargrave game to date.  Both teams are really kicking butt…

The Norcom Greyhounds are 21-1 and #1 in the state of Virginia (AAA).  The defending state champs got as high as #4 in the nation in the ESPN Rise poll.  They currently sit at #7 in the land thanks to wins over #5 Findlay Prep and other powers like Word of God (Raleigh – John Wall’s school) and Dematha.  Dorian Finney-Smith, now a 5-star recruit in the ESPN rankings, is averaging 19 points per game [I have stats from 17 of his 21 games].  His high game for the year is 32 points.

The Hargrave Post-Grad team is 21-0 and just bombard their overwhelmed opponents.  C.J. Barksdale scores between 16 and 20 most nights, but had 42 points and 13 rebounds against roanoke earlier in the year.  Robert Brown is stroking it from the perimeter, but can also attack the rim.  He is scoring around 15 points per game.  And Marquis Rankin is showing he’s a real field general.  Dude can rack up the assists.

So Tech’s 2011 signees are a combined 42-1 on the year!  I’d say they are winners and hopefully will continue that way next year.

Niemo is a member of the VT Class of '98. Attended every home basketball game during his 4 years at VT after missing the first home game. Has attended 122 straight VT football home games (every game since '94), eclipsing the 100 mark in September of '09. During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo. Niemo currently lives in DC and speaks the Hokie gospel as often as possible. He watches over 50% of all ACC games, making him one of the most knowledgeable experts on ACC basketball.

I have been telling you guys for years now… just wait until you see C.J. in orange and maroon. Gonna be ridiculous. I was gonna be happy with just him + Robert + Marquis, but with Dorian alongside them – and basically leading the recruiting class, though I think that C.J. is going to be the best player of them all, hands down – we are going to be a FORCE for at least the next few years.

In other news… our girls are facing Long Wood tonight. I wish them the best of luck and hope that they all come out unscathed. Just remember… a little bit at a time.

Zabian is making over $186K (I assume that’s a prorated amount of the minimum for the rest of the season). Get ‘em Zabe!! Keep working and get that next-level contract!!

Mcdonald’s All-Americans released today. Finney-Smith didn’t make the cut. Dave Telep said that he thought Finney-Smith was a snub and deserved to make it. I’ll take his word on that one since he’s so highly regarded. He’s REALLY high on Finney-Smith.

Disappointing he didn’t make it as I think it would have done a little bit for our exposure but it is what it is. Hopefully Finney-Smith uses this as motivation and plays with a chip on his shoulder!

Is there a chance that CJ or Dorian won’t be with us 4 years?

Looking forward to Finney-Smith to continue the great tradition of dual last name players.

@Chris… absolutely. There’s always a chance when you’re bringing in good recruits. And all four guys next year fit that bill. I won’t take wagers, but it wouldn’t shock me if any one or two of those guys leaves early.
