TSL Article on Underpaid Assistants

Very interesting ARTICLE BY CHRIS COLEMAN ON TSL about how Virginia Tech’s assistant coaches are underpaid compared to where they go, and other schools in the league.  It gives a different perspective on all the “It must be tough to work for Seth” banter.

Niemo is a member of the VT Class of '98. Attended every home basketball game during his 4 years at VT after missing the first home game. Has attended 122 straight VT football home games (every game since '94), eclipsing the 100 mark in September of '09. During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo. Niemo currently lives in DC and speaks the Hokie gospel as often as possible. He watches over 50% of all ACC games, making him one of the most knowledgeable experts on ACC basketball.

I remember when we went through the same issue with football and almost lost Beamer to UNC. Unfortunately, SG is not in as strong a negotiating position. If he threatens to leave they may let him. I assume that if he leaves instead of being fired that he would forfeit the buyout money. I would guess that assts. are less important in b-ball than they are in football. But, we should still pay them in line with other ACC schools.

An enlightening article. I thought of the Beamer episode also.

It seems to me that there are just too many ‘issues’ with the VT BB program. Nothing good is going happen until some of them (if not all) are addressed. I am convinced that we can have the program we all want, including an excited fan base. Being in the ACC, we shouldn’t have any problem drawing good crowds to the Cassell. But we have to be competitive.

    We can only hope.

Through the pay wall, you can also see Coleman’s article on how attrition and staff turnover have held VT back:

Coleman has been on a roll lately.

James Johnson is now leaving for Clemson. Wow… this ship is sinking fast.

Is this a reflection on Seth (don’t like working for Seth) or because they are concerned Seth will be let go and they will be without a job when a new coach comes in?

      • Niemo

We’ll never know. It comes from a bucket of 5 things in all likelihood as changing any job does – location, growth potential, $$$, like/don’t like your boss(es), fear of losing a job. The first 2 we can throw out this year because I’m not sure I’d rank Birmingham or clemson over B’burg, and they’ve been lateral moves. I’m sure the latter 3 all play into it but I’m not sure how much.

Sure adds weight to the Seth approaching SMU rumor and sounds like all are anticipating some shoe to drop that affects the department, staff, and/or team.

James Johnson is gone – John Richardson is the only guy standing – I’m betting he takes a job at ODU.

I have no knowledge on that – peer guess lol.
