Breaking News: Virginia Tech fires Seth Greenberg, remaining assistants

Virginia Tech Athletics Director Jim Weaver announced at a 4 p.m. press conference that Seth Greenberg has been fired.

Weaver, when asked about the decision, said “I’m not going to throw coach Greenberg under the bus, so I’m going to pass on that question.”

The decision was made last week according to Weaver and Greenberg was notified at 1:30 this afternoon. The players were told around 3:30.

There will be no outside search firm hired to find a replacement. The hiring process will be done in house.

They didn’t say that they were firing the remaining assistants – or should I say assistant, as I believe that John Richardson is the only one left. Rather, they said that it would be up to the new head coach as to whether or not Richardson is retained.

  2. TomG says:

Richardson was already talking to ODU before Greenberg was dismissed

Weave said they had already decided not to renew his contract after next season and went ahead with the firing today since all but one of the assistants had left.

Guess that left out the option that he would be fired sometime next season and one would be promoted from within the staff as an interim replacement. I think there was no logical successor once Johnson had quit to go to Clemson.
