Farewell Harrell

The Richmond Times Dispatch is reporting that 2012 signee, forward Montrezl Harrell, has asked for his release. Harrell was a top 100 recruit according to every service, and would have plugged a huge hole inside next year. Instead, like seemingly every other year, Tech will have no depth in the post. Only Raines, Barksdale, and JVG return as true post players. Signee Marshall Wood, who is 6’8″ but more of a perimeter player who does not have the bulk yet to battle inside in the ACC, may be forced to play the 4 at times.

Well, I’m sure Wood isn’t too bummed about this (secretly, of course). His minutes are guaranteed to go up. I was really looking forward to seeing Eddie on the wing all season, but he may be forced to play some 4 again. Unless JJ can somehow poach a guy with remaining eligibility who can transfer right away, like UNC did with Justin Knox and FSU did with Jeff Peterson?

  • Chris

Gonna be a long, long season. JJ really has his work cut out for him.

This program has taken some major steps back. Probably going to be a bid while before we’re even in the conversation for a NCAA bid.

Even with DFS and Harrell, we still needed another guy or two for depth. Now with both gone and nobody on the horizon… I mean we only have eight bodies for next season. It’s going to be a disaster.

    • http://www.heyhokie.com Goodraisin

Call me the eternal optimist, but I don’t know about that. If the Hokies are plagued with injuries again this year, you’re right… dead in the water. However, we still return a very good group of 8 guys. If you need to give some minutes to a walk-on guard, that shouldn’t be a huge deal. The other thing I was thinking about… you could possibly see a football player walk on if they saw the real possibility of getting minutes. There are a lot of guys on the football team who had to make a tough choice between football and basketball when they left high school.

      • Chris

I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt it. Only eight bodies, one of them being a guy who redshirted last season and by all accounts, wasn’t near ready to play… the other a true freshman who’s a beanpole (no offense to him, but he needs to add bulk)…

One injury and we’re down to seven scholarship players. This next season will be much worse than last year. Hope I’m wrong, but really doubt I am.

    • HipHop_Hokie

Wouldn’t it be awesome if either Logan or Marcus could suit up with the bball squad… too bad both are projected to be sure fire draft picks next year. Who knows… maybe one or both will decide they love VT so much that they’ll give it a run for the season just to help out, but I won’t be holding my breath.

This sequence of events has been absolutely devastating. I’m confident that Erick, Cadarian, and Jarell can come back and play well in leading the team… but we’ll have to pray all season long that they can stay both healthy and out of foul trouble. C.J. has to man up now and earn his scholly… there’s no more being able to complain about lack of PT. I think that with the needed minutes keepin him on the floor for 30+ minutes a game, we are going to see him really blossom and show what he can really do. Hope so, anyways.

Marquis has got to be able to give efficient minutes to both spell Erick and allow him to play the 2 some… and hopefully Marshall will grow up fast.

I’m gonna try my best to stay optimistic, but we might be in for a rough one. Let’s keep our fingers crossed in “free agency” as college seems to be going nowadays… another decent guard and solid big man (Baru??) wouldn’t hurt.

  • Rick

    Way to go Jim Weaver….

  • King

Is it too late to reverse our stance on Chaney? Kidding. Feels like the worst of it is over & now we can start the rebuilding process. I think we’ll be ok with Green-pg, Brown-sg, Eddie-sf, Barksdale/JVZ-pf, & Raines-pf/c. Not naive enough to think things can’t & won’t get worse before they better so I will keep my fingers crossed that everyone remains healthy & eligible. Got to be tough to be a VT Bball fan. I have a lot of faith in the new coaching staff. Their bios read like leaders of men.

    • hokiegrad

It could be hard in the short run with a small crew, but I have to agree about the coaching staff. It sounds like we’ve upgraded significantly in the assistant department. I expect them to bring in some good classes in the years ahead if JJ can hold things together.

  • Jack

Well, this opens up a spot for one of my high school buddies to try and walk on! Haha. He’ll make it too and will look super intimidating in warm ups, great athlete and can stroke it. Can’t wait!

  • FruitpieTheMagician

Damn, this is getting to be a fruitpie with no filling! Hostess has filed for Bankruptcy – looks like we should too.

  • Mo

Well if you check out his twitter, some tech fan already tweeted nasty stuff at him. Great way to make sure he doesn’t recommit here because he still could have.
“Thanks for the support #motivation “[name removed]: @MONSTATREZZ you’re an [bleep] and I hope you fail at every level of the game #Hokies””

  • Andy McCullough

Can someone please explain to me how our program is better off now? Just don’t get how status quo for one more year would have been so horrible. Certainly would never ever root against us to fail, just really ticked off. Hope doesn’t set us back 5 years when I think we would have had a really great year this year.

    • http://www.heyhokie.com Goodraisin

Here’s how, my friend… DFS was going to leave anyway, so keeping Greenberg would only have saved us Harrell. Given the fact that he lost all 3 of his assistant coaches and his director of basketball ops, I’m not sure that there wouldn’t have been more fallout. You may have seen some of our current guys transfer to other schools. The timing was late, but the decision seems to be right.

  • BJ

Very depressing news. I really wish Greenberg was given 1 more year. Now there’s no other choice but for us to go all in with JJ.

  • Blue Collar Hokie

    It’s times like this. . .

that I wish Niemo would let us cuss

Seriously though the upperclassmen on this team have to grow up quick and be leaders if we have any glimmer of hope of a successful season. Heck I dont even know what a successful season would be at this point.

  • Richmond Hokie

So what options do we have to fill up the roster with schollies at this point? JUCO transfers? An unsigned in-coming frosh? Open try-outs on campus? I just gotta think we need more players.

    • Niemo

VT doesn’t go the JUCO route. They need to have been qualifiers out of HS, which most JUCOs aren’t. I like the open tryouts idea! Reminds me of the move Necessary Roughness… “Hello, Fightin’ Armadillos…”

      • RK in Roanoke

I recall a year while I was at Tech, my soph, I think, where they had sort of an open tryout. A guy who lived in Lee as a frosh that could shoot lights out not only made the squad, but first game of the year took the final shot to try and tie the game. He missed, but, still got good minutes out of him.
Quinton Nottingham. Had a decent career at VT. Was a game announcer, too. Think I saw in the alumni mag that he got his PhD from Tech.

        • Niemo

Ha, Q? Know him very well. He’s a professor in Pamplin. Great guy.

  • kiawahhokie

Bynington posed on Twitter that he’s a Hokie. Here’s to hoping he can bring that big man with him from CofC

  • Les

Realistically, they should be able to find someone who can be the 4th guard next year and may develop over time as a backup who can play 10-20 minutes (i.e., the 3rd guard).

    • http://www.heyhokie.com Goodraisin

This is my thought too. There are probably some guys who could walk on and handle that 4th guard spot. Paul Debnam gave us quality minutes when he was forced to fill in two season ago. Frontcourt depth is probably okay as long as we don’t have any injuries (and that’s almost certainly asking too much).

  • BJ

Are we still in on any of those transfers that Greenberg was recruiting or has that ship sailed? Where is Debnam when we need him?!? He definitely filled a vital role on the team. I’ll never forget the effort he put out in the NIT when he was forced to basically play CENTER! What heart that guy has.

Firing Seth was what i wanted, and we even got that wrong….it should’ve been done immediately after the season. Weaver has cost the guys who are staying a season of their careers.

If he was ambivalent at seasons’ end he should have given him the other year, regardless of assistants moving on or not. The whole “all his assistants are leaving, and i didn’t like the taste of that” rhetoric is garbage. Because Weaver knows Seth would have brought on a bunch of dudes on one year deals and they would’ve been terminated along with him next year anyhow.

I understand the contract wasn’t going to be renewed, but Seth didn’t need to know that, we had no obligation to tell him now. It might not be completely above-board management, but i imagine a contract that would extend beyond next season could begin negotiations sometime in the Spring, or at season’s end. Could have made him sing for his supper by putting the onus on us having a very good season next year.

It cost us a very good player in Harrell…a player who is aggressive, and wants the responsibility (unlike poor Doe Doe), who wanted to shine against Carolina and Duke…

And it’s going to cost Eric Green a chance at going dancing. That’s who i feel bad for. Eric Green: who’s going to have to play 38 minutes a night, score 23-25 a night, and have us still come up short because we don’t have an ample bench to get him the extra rest making a tournament run requires.

Manny Atkins would be helpful to have right now. He could be giving us 30 minutes a night off the bench, playing fantastic D on whoever the other team’s best scorer is, and giving us low double digit scoring efforts. He could also keep Eddie motivated.

All of you are excited about Eddie, but i see a one dimensional player, a poor man’s Allan Houston. Sweet stroke, mild athleticism, and a tendency to shoot our team into a 4 on 5 attack, because they just let him stand in the corner and miss. I think he has use, but i cringe when i see him playing 30 minutes a night for us and finishing games. Hopefully he takes to playing a little 4, he’ll have to.

Great idea on football players, i remember getting waxed my Freshman year in the intramural playoffs by the Deshazo/Freeman group….lob city indeed.

    • chuck

      Eddie:

      13 games of <40% shooting….

      Surprisingly good rebounder….4.8 per game…but 13 games of 6 or more….including back to back 10 and 14 v UVA and BYU….

      3pt % better than i remembered….but modally it's still a mess with lots of o-fers and 1-fers….17 games with 1 or 0….

Markedly worse FG% in ACC play…only 2 games at 50% or better…only 6 of 18 games did he shoot better than 42% (he shot 42.5 on the year)….
