During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout for being a "Super Fan" during his time at VT. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.

DFS may end up there as well. Don’t think many here will be rooting for Louisville anytime soon…

Harrell puts them one over the scholarship limit according to this article.

When did Pitino ever let a little issue like scholarship limits get in his way? But then maybe Pitino can develope Harrell to the level he wants. I’m not sure Greenburg would have.

    GO HOKIES!!!

  • Les

Harrell has already committed. Someone giving up that scholarship for Harrell is a done deal. Further sacrifices in addition to the four converted walk-ons over two years is not a shoo-in for DFS.

    • Hank

College basketball is a dirty business. To take away scholarships from guys who have worked hard and maintained their end of the deal is wrong, even if the guys are “volunteers”. We know what that means…. Pitino has been at the head of the class with this tactic, as he will find a way to get the guys he wants on his team. Same goes with waitresses……..

  • Max

I figured he was going to Louisville just because of his connection with assistant Keatts.

    Good riddance

Swapshire has graduated…he was injured one year but got his free 4years from Louisville. Buckles has been injured forever and has 3 years of free education while playing one year and he would not likly see the court again…maybe anywhere. While I am a VT fan, Harrell is making the correct decision. Louisville has the best arena in college basketball (Yumm Center) and a hall of fame coach that is positioned to get back to the final 4. VT has a rokie coach that was not even a HS head coach and will not contend in the ACC for awhile. While I love VT…it is a football school and Weaver has run the BBall program into the ground!!

    • Blue Collar Hokie

Weaver ran the what into the what now? Explain?

      • LJ

Because Weaver and Greenburg did not see eye to eye he sent him packing at the expense of the program! Not a secret or that difficult to understand. Johnson left a month earlier for Clemson and did not put his house up for sale and sources have stated he “packed his small suite case”. Johnson who was not even a High School head coach, now is going up against the likes of Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Mark Turgeon, Lenard Hamilton, Jim Larranaga, Tony Bennett, Mark Gottfried etc. The last three coaches hired before Johnson – Bennett (Coach of the Year PAC10), Mark Turgeon (Coach of the Year Big 12) and Jim Larranaga (Final 4 and Numerous Coach of Yeas in the CAA) all have what it takes to win in this conference but it will take a while. Do you really think we have a shot at ever being in the top three in the conference?? Not hardly…Something Seth was getting closer to accomplishing…Like I said …set up for failure and Weaver needs to be held accountable to the fans who spend their money to see them play and ultimately pay his salary!!

        • 69HOKIE

I think a lot us agree that Weaver mishandled the Greenburg issue wrong, and probably other coaching changes as well. But I, for one, am happy SG is gone. He should have been fired after the 2010-11 season. Even with Harrell, next year was going to be another train wreck, and we would be in the NIT, AGAIN. I’m not so sure that Finney-Smith would have been the only transfer.

I also agree that Weaver should retire, for the good of his health and VA TECH.

          • chuck

            This….simply this…

But i will add….we should have held onto Seth if we didn’t want to fire him 2nd week of March…

Since college hoops is such a dirty biz, as someone else alluded to, we were within our rights to keep tabs on our property (i.e. the players)….

Lucky we didn’t run into a Tom Brands situation (VT Wrestling)….if Johnson is a godsend similar to Kevin Dresser, we might make the NIT with 8 scholarship players….

          • LJ

Right…Truthfully, like you I was not initially unhappy that SG was leaving VT. My first impression was that Weaver had a plan to bring in Shaka Smart, Tommy Amaker, Brad Stevens or Ed Cooley..Etc.. There are others that are having very good successes at mid-majors or D-1 programs not considered at the competitive level of the ACC and would love the opportunity. We have not been a bottom feader in the conference and Seath had done a good job getting VT above the “Mendoza Line” and was certainly knocking at the door of respectability. I like you think it was a good time to now bring in a coach who could take the program to the next level…top 3 or 4 consistently in the conference…Unfortunately we have taken two steps back. I can’t blame Johnson for taking the job…as they say don’t look gift horse in the mouth…but as a paying fan I can hold Weaver responsible and hopefully the University President and other decision makers will also point that out to him when this project fails….

        • RK in Roanoke

Shaka Smart – first HC job ever – VCU
Tommy Amaker – 1st HC job Seton Hall
Brad Stevens – 1st HC job Butler
Ed Cooley – 1 st HC job Fairfield

Seems like lots of guys go from being top asst in college directly to being HC at good, mid-level programs. And then improve those programs.
Be honest, if VT had hired Smart in 2009, would anybody have been ecstatic? Probably not. Now he is a name and we wouldn’t break the bank for him.
SG had a been a HC at two other places and he did not exactly set the conference on fire.
Maybe in a few years we will have our own success story. It depends how well he recruits and teaches from here. I am willing to give him the support he needs. Not going to call it two steps back just yet.

          • chuck

Well, if you count loss of recruiting momentum not just with Harrell in 2012, but whatever Seth was working on for 2013 and 2014; and add in whatever obstacles the skepticism regarding our brand present now that we’ve made these questionable moves, and you’ve got yourself stuck in wet but rapidly drying concrete….

2 steps back would indicate maybe a 10 win team, but stagnation is almost a fate just as bad….

  • Les

Ya. He has to make the best decision for himself based on the basketball program first and the school next. I don’t begrudge him for leaving. It would be the same if he were in a special degreee program and your mentor or sponsor was no longer there. He should go where he thinks he’ll have the support he needs.

We still with scholarships available and Mislav Brzoja looking for school.

Kid is ranked among the 10 best players in Europe born in 1994 according to Eurohopes.com

    • Jack

That would be such a big help if we got him. He’s got some game and a great shooter, something we don’t exactly have. But Kentucky is trying to get him so that doesn’t look too good for us

  • chuck

If a real good player isn’t available to join us for the upcoming campaign, then there’s no point in rushing anything at all….let’s just waste the year.

I long for the days of Odessa and Jacinto stocking pipelines to major programs….let’s just go pick up some JUCOs Tark and Billy Tubbs style and ride em to some Final Fours….it’s not like outsiders look at our hoops program and think it’s instructive as to how the rest of our student body pursues academics. If anyone looks at Duke and thinks that, they’re idiots too….let’s eliminate the facade and go get some mercenaries.

  • Max

Does anybody have any info on Jerron Wilbut? I haven’t heard anything new on him in a couple of months. Is VT still being considered? What’s holding him back from committing?

  • Les

Wilbut’s grades are supposedly an issue.

It’s not known whether the current staff has interest.

Northwestern Univ. has turned down two European commits now. The second guy is a 6’8″ Serbian PF who likes to shoot outside.

  • Les

Dorian Finney-Smith to Florida per Recruit Scoop.
