Preview | rhode island (0-1) @ VT (1-0) | Monday, 7 PM | ESPN3

An old thorn in the Hokies’ side comes to the Cassell on Monday.  The rhodey rams, who are 3-1 all time at the Cassell, including knocking VT out of the NIT Quarterfinals three years ago, head to Blacksburg.  But this is a team that went 7-24 last season, including an 11-point loss at home to the Hokies.

While the Hokies rolled to an 18-point win in JJ’s debut vs etsu, the rams dropped their opener at home to norfolk state (the same spartans that beat #2 seed missouri in the NCAA Tournament so don’t read too much into that).

Tech will have to slow Nikola Malesevic, who exploded for 26 points against norfolk state and had 23 against the Hokies last year.  Meanwhile, xavier munford was 3/19 from the field for the rams including 2/10 from behind the arc.  VT should go ahead and let him shoot as much as he wants.  rhodey shot just 28% for the game, but did snag 15 offensive rebounds so Tech will need to do a better job on the glass.  The rams like to gamble on defense so the Hokies can have success pushing the ball and making the extra pass, or faking and either cutting or taking the ball yourself.

Green had 24 points off the bench in that game in Kingston last year, Eddie added 15, and Raines 12.

You can read a little bit into the home loss to Norfolk State… NSU lost Kyle O’Quinn to graduation and the Orlando Magic. They still have some good players left, but O’Quinn was far and away the best player on last year’s team. Still though, I agree that you would hope our Hokies don’t take the Rams lightly.

Anyone noticed that Harrell started for Louisville opening night? What a loss for this team, as we could really have used the additional inside presence. After seeing what we did on the boards opening night, I am afraid that we might have have issues inside that will be hard to compensate for in 2012. No wonder JJ is rolling the dice on big man for next year…….

Hank – I refuse to comment on him (or check his stats). Nothing against you and I know others are interested so I appreciated you posting it, but I won’t comment. To me, it is like hearing about what your ex did with some new guy! Maybe that’s a tad extreme, but you get my point.

    Rankin back for tonight’s game?

Greenberg and Pitino both say that he’s not a good defensive rebounder. He didn’t have many rebounds last night, but Louisville is so deep in the frontcourt. He runs the court well, crashes the boards from the weak side, and has the humoungous wing span reminiscent of Ben Wallace.

Alex Len also looks tremdous for Maryland. He completely dominated Kentucky’s frontline. His inability to get admitted to VT reminds me of Gary Williams’ last year when he couldn’t get several last-minute recruits enrolled. The schools were no longer willing to go the extra mile for the BB coaches imo.

Niemo – I agree with you. We only want those people that WANT to be at Tech. Let’s not dwell on what could have been.

Harrell and DFS could have stayed and possibly made this a special year for Tech and themselves. They didn’t want to be at Tech and play for JJ. So be it! Let’s forget about ‘em and move on.
