Hokies Not Ranked

Maybe I got ahead of myself Saturday when I stated the Hokies would be ranked come Monday.  Apparently both the AP and coaches still want to see more from this up-start, rag-tag group of ragamuffins.  The Hokies were two spots away from cracking the AP Poll (VT received 170 votes while #25 nc state, at 4-2 and 20 point losers to oklahoma state, had 234 votes).  In the USA Today Coaches Poll Tech was five spots away — receiving just 38 points.  #25 notre dame had 92 points.

Well, I guess there’s only one thing left to do…

The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.

    Win the whole thing?

    • Cope-acabana says:

If by “whole thing” you mean wvu, then yes.

      • NoDak says:

I was picking up a Major League vibe from Niemo there, but this is a mostly family-friendly site, so I altered the quote slightly.

Tom Berenger after hearing the owner’s plans to tank and move the team:

“Well, I guess there’s only one thing left to do. Win the whole f***in’ thing.”

        • Niemo says:

NoDak – that’s what I was going with! And thanks for censoring, we do try to be family-friendly (to a degree). Maybe dysfunctional family friendly is a better way to put it.

I don’t really care. As long as we keep winning, we will be ranked. Polls don’t really mean anything. I’m more concerned about finishing our OOC slate with W’s and winning in ACC play.

  3. schmitty says:

do we have to win all our games before acc play to get ranked?

  4. Gibby says:

    win the whole damn thing

  5. 69HOKIE says:

Let’s hope they use this as motivation to go out and work harder, and just keep winning. Regardless of their ranking, they are fun to watch and they give us hope.

    GO HOKIES!!!

Kick the crap out of West Virginia!

I know you guys will do your usual, excellent preview; but a quick look at WVU shows them not as good as Ok St. The real test is the hostile environs, not having the home crowd behind them. VT can beat wvu, probably should. First real road test, kind of wish they didn’t have to wait so long to play.

Jeff Goodman of cbs wrote an article about the undefeated teams and while he did give props to EG, he said “there just aren’t enough quality bodies in blacksburg.” I tweeted to him letting him know that Eddie and Brown are 3rd and 16th in the ACC in scoring. Its frustrating how little he knows about the team. Also tired of hearing about our depth too, most teams will do it with 8-9 players. If you dont have any major injuries and stay out of foul trouble that is all you need.

    • Krishna says:

Exactly. People keep saying that we have an issue with depth, but Rankin, and Wood have proven to be capable backups. JVZ is good enough as a backup center and Will Johnston is the greatest player to ever step on a basketball court.

But really, we go 9 deep and that’s really all a team needs. But I don’t care if the media doesn’t give us the respect we deserve, if we beat WVU then they’ll be forced to.

  9. Mark says:

Anyone wonder what things would be like if some of our players hadnt left? I know everyone talks of Harrell and Doe-doe (I refuse to write doo-doo), but even Manny Atkins would be nice to have at this point. What about Ben Boggs? Tyrone Garland?

Garland might have been a head case, but Manny and Boggs would help with depth issues.

I hope this incoming class is a bunch of sleepers.

    • King says:

Don’t wonder, don’t care…with the exception of Chaney. Everyone else chose to leave of their own voltion. We have great team chemistry right now and it just takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

I was going to say Toga! Toga! Toga!

  11. HokieGuru says:

The media wants to see us win a hostile road game – WVU will provide that test. Watching how JJ coaches the team in a hostile environment (e.g WVU) is something that I’m looking at, though. WVU thrives – I say thrives in rebounds, second and third chance opportunities on offense – and loose ball turnovers. They are a horrific shooting team and need those ops. If we take care of the ball – and stay even on the boards, we’re going to win there. I’m just hoping Coach Huggins style of play (some call him Thuggins) doesn’t get any of our guys hurt. I remember his ish at Cincy – good heavens.

  12. Ryan says:

Worry not about rankings… continue to win against quality opponents and the rest will take care of itself… you don’t have to be ranked in the top 25 to make the NCAA tournament which is obviously the biggest goal for any team… rankings are based on opinions and biased… wins and losses and who you beet is fact…
VT obviously lacks respect on the hard court and indeed does need to do more than other teams to garner the recognition… all the more motivation, fuel to the fire… forget the rankings… can they win against N.C., N.C. State, Duke? do that your in good shape… lose and were once again N.I.T bound.. a program on the fringe snubbed by voters….
