Opponent Hall of Fame

After each game we’ll induct a new player (from the opponent) into the TechHoops.com Hall of Fame after Tech makes them look like the greatest player in the world.

Today’s inductee is maryland freshman Jake Layman.  Coming into today he was averaging 3.2 ppg and had never scored more than 10 in a game.  He was 5/29 from 3-point range (17%) entering today’s action.

Well, he went off for 20 points today, including 18 at the break on 6/7 shooting and 4/5 from 3-point range.  Yep, he almost had as many made 3s in one half as he had all season in 13 games.  And he had 600% more points than his average points per game.

Past entries:

  • byu: Tyler Haws – 42 points on 14/25 shooting (6/8 from 3-point range).  Averages less than half that per game – 20.9 ppg.  Has made more than 2 three-pointers in just 2 other games.
  • csu: Dorian Green – 18 points on 5/6 from 3-point range.  Green was a 30% 3-point shooter coming into the game, but found his stroke against the Hokies, going 5/6 from deep and is now a 37% 3-point shooter on the season.

During the final home basketball game of his senior year, he was brought onto the court and was awarded 2 passes to the Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament in Philly during a timeout for being a "Super Fan" during his time at VT. The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.

    Nice.

One has to begin to wonder if we work on 3pt D and Defensive rebounding in practice.
Or is it that going against ourselves, it looks like we are practicing good 3pt D and rebounding.

  2. Blue Collar Hokie says:

what about the kid from wvu? wasnt the vt game his coming out party?

    • Niemo says:

BCH – Yeah, true, but my bitterness on Saturday only went 3 games deep (since the wvu game was actually close). If someone from bc lights us up tonight, I’ll update it with the wvu guy.
