Game Recap | VT (10-6, 1-2) 70, gt (10-5, 0-3) 65 in OT

UPDATED: 1.12.13 at 7:45 p.m. to include more stats from the game.

The Hokies snapped their four-game losing streak and picked up their first ACC win of the season by beating georgia tech on the road, 70-65, in overtime. It is head coach James Johnson’s first ACC win as a head coach.

Erick Green, the nation’s leading scorer, led the way with 28 points. And it would appear that C.J. Barksdale, also known as “the transfer from GW” by the announcers, has learned his lesson about dogging it in practice. He had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Overtime was the most exciting five minutes of the game. Virginia Tech did nothing in the first half and scored a season-low 22 points. At one point, they went 10:10 without a field goal. The Hokies took a 12-11 lead on a jumper by Green with 10:44 left and didn’t score another field goal until Green scored again on a fast break with 34 seconds left in the half. Tech did manage eight free throws during that stretch.

Tech trailed gt 25-22 at the break and trailed the entire second half. After falling behind by 11 points midway through the second half, Green took over and led the Hokies to an ugly comeback that saw VT score the final five points of the game to tie it and send it to overtime.

Trailing 47-40 with 9:54 to play in the game, Green scored the next 10 points for the Hokies to keep the visiting team in the game and cut gt’s lead to 53-50 with 6:51 to go. From that point on, game was almost unwatchable as both teams struggled.

The yellow jackets went to the free throw line and hit 2-of-4 shots over the next three minutes to take a 55-50 lead. Tech scored the final five points of regulation. Barksdale made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead to four; Cadarian Raines got a nice offensive rebound and putback to make it a 2-point game; and then georgia tech, rather than let the Hokies take a shot, fouled Green and sent him to the line where he made both free throws to tie the game with :24 left.

Bad tech managed to get a shot off, but missed badly and Jarell Eddie grabbed the defensive rebound with :03 left. VT called a timeout and set up a play in which Green got off a half-court shot that missed, sending the game into OT.

There the Hokies scored the first seven points to take a 62-55 lead. gt called a timeout and staged a comeback, cutting Tech’s lead to 62-60 and then again to 64-63, but poor shot selection and rebounding allowed the Hokies to hold on, hit some free throws down the stretch and pull out a hard fought win.

Robert Brown missed the last game because of the flu and played poorly during regulation missing on all nine of his field goal attempts. OT, however, was a different story. He was a perfect 2-for-2 and scored four of the Hokies 15 points in the extra session. And while he con

The Hokies, despite giving up size up front, won the rebounding battle, 43-32, thanks in large part to Barksdale who had nearly a fourth of all rebounds for Good Tech.

Let’s hope this gives our guys some confidence, and leads to some more wins. It appeared they really wanted this one.

All I want to see from this point on is improvement. And I saw improvement today.

Easily Barksdale’s best game this season, and probably of his young career. Hopefully he can build off of this. He battled hard on the boards and seemed to really have his head in the game, which was good to see.

The shooting numbers were poor but Brown was aggressive today. Good to see as well. Hopefully he and Eddie can get their 3pt shooting back up.

Good win. Nice job not giving up when the game got into double digits in the 2nd half. Green carried us, as usual, but it was nice to see guys like Barksdale and Brown contributing again. You can see the talent there… just have to start putting things together.

The first game since early December that I recall the guards didn’t just give up getting the ball inside to the big men after the first five minutes. It’s probably the most number of shots (17), or percentage of the total team shots attempted (29%), that were contributed by the C/PF positions. It was a good move to let Brown handle the ball and give off to Green to dribble-drive to set up the big men.

Good to see Brown take over offensively in OT. His back to back baskets and the assist on the Eddie 3 were BIG. He needs to refine his shot selection but stay aggressive.

Eddie, Brown, and CJB have stunk during our losing streak, but all 3 stepped up in OT (and CJB had a great game). That’s progress people!

With our depth issues any win during ACC play is a good win, especially on the road. And with our struggles during the first half they could’ve easily thrown in the towel. I’m proud of how they battled tonight. Love the hustle from Barksdale.

Like always, thanks for your breakdown of the game.

i was wondering about the whole barksdale being a transfer from gw thing. i was sitting there thinking, “seems like i would know that.”

this win was all erick green. the way he has carried this team on his back for the last two years, they oughta hang his picture next to bimbo’s when he leaves.

So happy for a win! Great to see our guys show some grit and get out of the hole they were in. Their defense was phenomenally better in this game.
