ACC Tournament Seeding

With one game to go, Tech’s seeding options for the ACC Tournament are pretty straight forward. They can finish in the 10, 11, or 12 slot.

10 – VT wins at wake and clemson loses at miami. Would play fsu or maryland in the Thursday night session at 7 PM.
11 – VT wins at wake and clemson wins at miami (hey, gt just won at miami so it is possible). Would play maryland or fsu in the Thursday night session at 9:30 PM.
12 – VT loses at wake, they finish dead last all by themselves and would play nc state or uva at 2:30 on Thursday.

Nice. Do we know what happens next year in the Big 10/ACC challenge? Do Syracuse and Pitt get to compete in it, or do they have to wait another year? I would like to see VT play in it, even if it’s against Penn State or some such terribleness.

    • Niemo

They’ll announce the pairings for the Challenge in a few months. I would expect maryland would be dropped from it and the rest, who knows. notre lame could be in the ACC for next season, so I guarantee you they’d demand being in the challenge. If we end up alone in dead last I would strongly bet we won’t be in the Challenge, but that’s just a guess.

Cuse and Pitt do get to compete. The worst 2 RPIs will be held out, which today would be Wake and Clemson. But we are only just above Wake… We need to win Sunday.

Exactly the info I was looking to find, thanks!

      • Niemo

        Thanks!

I would find it hard to believe the ACC would let maryland participate next year in the ACC/B14 Challenge. Maybe they’ll be the bigger man and let them, but I am not a big man – I’d change the by-law and let one of the other bottom feeders participate.

It’s really decided by RPI? That is dumb

        • Niemo

I think they should put envelopes in a rolling-thingy and draw teams. Could do the only ‘frozen envelope’ trick to ensure unc and duke get drawn (if you’ve never heard this story, all of the NBA teams that didn’t make the playoffs used to have an equal shot at winning the lottery. There’s a myth/legend that the year Patrick Ewing was coming out, the NBA wanted him in NY with the Knicks because they thought it would be good for basketball. The story goes that they froze the Knicks envelope so that when Commish. Stern reached in, he could find it and pull the Knicks. Of course, the Knicks got him. Who knows if true, but funny.) Could also freeze maryland’s envelope so they don’t get drawn. They do this sort of drawing in European soccer and it gets a lot of excitement and they even show it on TV. ohio state vs duke! Yeah! wake vs northwestern? Ugh.

What’s up with this BPI that ESPN and Joe Lunardi keep pushing? UVA has a BPI in the 40′s but an RPI in the 60′s. Whatever. Unless, UVA goes on and wins Saturday and at least 2 in the tourney I’ll be pissed if they make the NCAA’s with basically the same sort of resume that kept Tech out a few years back. Hell, their out of conference schedule strength is in the 300′s!

        • Niemo

uva’s RPI dropped a bunch after the fsu loss and I’m sure their BPI did, too.

  • hooleyhoopty

Any ideas of who we could possibly be paired against should we get the 10, 11, or 12 seed? Who might we encounter in the 2nd round if we get past the initial game?

    • Niemo

It’s in the article now – 10 or 11 would be maryland or fsu, 12 would be uva or nc state (likely state). I think we should just worry about our First Round opponent for now, but obviously if we are the 12, and win, we’d then play uva or state (whomever got the 4) in the 2nd round. duke and unc will be the 2 or 3, so we’d play them based on where we end up.

  • hooleyhoopty

On another note, our women just lost in the 1st round of the tourney for the 6th straight season and finish the year a sparkling 10-20.

    • Drew

Is there another person down the hall from Weaver’s office that he can hire to coach them?

  • rickandbach

Need them to win, if only to ensure that we avoid the 2:30 game, so working people can watch the game live

    • Niemo

Wait, some of you still watch the games live?! I thought you just waited for me to post the highlights and let Niemo-vision decide what plays are worth watching! Of course, if you kept score based on my highlights, we’d win every game by 40.
