uva at VT Mini Preview

I posted the regular preview late last week but here are a few things to know for the Tuesday night 9 pm game between the Hokies and hoos at the Cassell:

  • uva is favored by 11.5 (they won by 20 at uva a few weeks ago)
  • This is the first basketball game under Whit’s watch. While it is a long shot VT wins, he certainly has to know Tech has to change their recent trend versus the hoos. The Hokies have lost 4 in a row to uva and 3 straight at home. Want to get in the good graces of the fan base? Beat uva.
  • A loss to the hoos would give Tech their 2nd longest losing streak ever at home vs uva (4). Tech lost 6 straight from 1939-47 in Blacksburg to uva.
  • These are 2 programs moving in polar opposite directions. uva has lost just 1 game in 2014, VT has won just 1
  • Devin Wilson needs just 5 assists to set the VT freshman record
  • uva is ranked #14 in the nation and are 12-1 in the league. They are 2.5 games ahead of duke for 2nd and just a half game behind 12-0 syracuse. They clinch a bye to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament (that is now Day 3 of the tourney and the Hokies will likely have been home for 48 hours by that point). Keep in mind uva hasn’t made it to Semi-Final Saturday in almost 20 years, so this is a great opportunity to end that incredible run of futility. But they were the #1 seed a few years ago and still lost in the quarters, so we’ll see what happens.
  • Tech clinches not having a losing record at the Cassell with a win. (8-7 right now with 3 games to go including this game)

The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.

Will they play zone against UVA? It would mark the third game in a row.

Niemo’s the real X’s and O’x guy, but I would imagine that JJ will employ the zone again since it’s worked relatively well that last two games.

It worked to the extent that neither Pitt nor Miami can knock down shots or has any post options. Late vs.Miami they (Miami) started attacking the basket via the dribble and had no issue getting shots there either. The scoring pace increased some; however, dribble penetration vs the zone is a no no. That is one of Tech’s issues and why they can’t man up. They don’t (guards particularly) seem to be able to keep guys in front of them. Dribble penetration kills them in man and is partially why Joey and Raines often have foul issues. Miami had no issues attacking the zone off the dribble when the finally realized that time was running out and that they were simply running out of time to continue to trust open jumpers. Also, it’s difficult tactically to stay in a zone when playing from behind. That was not an issue in either of the two previous games. When behind, time often squeezes you out of it.

        Mark – all great points.

uva shoots the 3 well (38% in ACC play) but they actually don’t shoot a lot of them (in fact, Tech has more made 3s in ACC play though at a much lower percentage). uva is a lot more athletic this year with Anderson and Brogdon taking a great role in their offense while Harris (and guys like Nolte) shooting the ball less. In fact, in the first game uva was “just” 6/18 (33%) on 3s. The problem was they started 5/11 from deep and the game was over by halftime.

I would expect to see VT start in the zone because of their deficiencies with perimeter man defense, as you said (a problem since Dowdell/Gordon left). The key to this game will be hoping the hoos aren’t knocking them down early, thus keeping Tech in the game and keeping the crowd into things. And if they are knocking them down, expect JJ to stay in the zone way too long (he seems hesitant to switch defenses), and so the game could get out of hand.

But I’d force uva to beat us from the outside and clog things up for Anderson/Brogdon. Harris has killed us in his career, but maybe, just maybe, in his final game against us he’ll finally be off.
