Zach LeDay Transferring to VT from south florida

In what now completes a 3-way trade, the Hokies have acquired Seth Allen (maryland) and Zach LeDay (south florida) as the players to be named later in the gus “benedict arnold” gilchrist deal*.

LeDay, a 6’7″ forward, played two seasons in Tampa, averaging 4.8 ppg as a freshman and 3.5 ppg this past season in 15 minutes per game.

Zach played on the same AAU team as Ben Emelogu in Texas (Dallas Mustangs), as the two grew up about 30 miles apart in the Lone Star state.  Although LeDay was a year older than Ben.

Zach will have to sit out this season and then will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2015-16 season.

*gilchrist infamously asked out of his signed LOI after the horrific shootings back in 2007.  Many questioned his true reason for asking out, as his stock had blown up after signing.  He eventually went to maryland for a year, but after realizing he’d have to sit another year and lose a year of eligibility, he transferred to south florida and played there (his handler conveniently got a job at usf as a video something-or-other).  Hence the 3-way trade joke, for those of you who had no idea what I was talking about.

The Hokie Bird made the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.

Did Gus ever play pro anywhere? Even Tibet or something?

    • Niemo says:

I have no idea. Haven’t ever looked. I realize I am the one that always brings his name back up, but in some ways I want to forget about him and so I’ve never researched what happened to him. The whole thing was always just really weird (his handler randomly emailed me years ago). Just very strange. I guess I should just let it go and stop bringing him up.

Did a little search on Augustus Gilchrist. He’s playing on the Iowa Energy of the NBA D League and he’s averaged 6.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game through 2 seasons.

Aimed for Egbunu, bagged LeDay. Seems kind of like aiming for a deer and hitting a squirrel, but oh well.

The Hokies experienced their worst season since the ricky "program bomb" stokes era. Sure, it would have been easy to quit on you, but did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? HELL NO!

And we do it for free! But, just like NPR, we rely on the generosity of our loyal fans to help keep this humble Hokie website alive. That being said, see how you can help make it to 10 years!

Jon King, Ben Floyd and Dan Rickenbach all got in on the action and we encourage all TechHoops heads to do the same.
