The Opposing View | duke | Q&A with the duke Basketball Report

Last week I put the hoos in their place in a Q&A with Chris Graham of thesportsdominion.com. This week we turn our attention to those brainiacs from Durham, North Carolina. Thanks to dukebasketballreport.com for participating in a friendly Q&A.

Interviewee

The duke Basketball Report (dBR) is the authority for duke basketball news. In other words, they are the “TechHoops.com” of duke basketball :-)

General Questions

Q1: Why do you think everyone else in the ACC hates duke so much?

dBR: That’s a better question for you. I guess success breeds contempt. No one seems to really hate Duke football.

Q2: I work in maryland and they REALLY hate duke. Almost to an unhealthy level. Where did this come from?

dBR: Not really sure. It only gradually dawned on me. I guess for Duke, Maryland was just a team to beat on the way to the NCAAs for a long time, and Maryland fans got sick of it. The team has gotten a lot more competitive lately too and it’s hardly a gimme game anymore. (Note: uva and unc also see duke as their rivals in basketball.)

Q3: Who would make a better villain on 24: christian laettner or j.j. redick?

dBR: Well, Laettner doesn’t care if you love him or not, so Laettner.

Q4: Walk me through what krzyzewski-ville is like. What goes on in those tents – shooting dice or doing schoolwork? What are the rules?

dBR: A lot of it’s pretty boring, schoolwork and what not. But there are parties, and a certain amount of abandon, and I’ve heard a few good stories…

Q5: Any chance we could see a “krzyzewski-ville Gone Wild” video soon?

dBR: Ha. Give them another idea ;)

THE ORANGE STORY

Scenario: Clemson team starts out of the gate pretty strong. All the pundits on all the talk shows talk about how good the team is, about how this time, with this Clemson team, things really are looking up. Then there’s an ambush on the road against a good team (that’s currently struggling a tad) and all of a sudden, things just go downhill fast…

What I’m alluding to, of course, is the plight of Clemson’s football team. That the Clemson basketball team is fading fast in an eerily similar fashion doesn’t come as a surprise to people like me who have long been aware of one painful truism: Clemson athletic teams assuredly exist for the sole purpose of inflicting unrelenting pain on the people who’ve chosen to give their devotion to the Tigers.

Okay, I suppose you get it that I’m used to disappointment. So now, on to the game, which I’m already convinced we’re going to lose in spectacular fashion.

Uncork the Colt 45, Hokies, and break out the real tomato ketchup — this is your year. Get ready to storm the court at Cassell next week, turkey calls a-blazing, to celebrate like Michael Vick found an extra year of eligibility. This is your time. Savor that feeling.

Now slap yourself in the face three times and stop dreaming.

Howdy. Let me start off by saying 2 things:

1) I have a deep, abiding hatred for all things Tech. You are all bastards and I hope you taste bitter, charred defeat.

2) Watching Miami play basketball is like watching “The Aristocrats” – it’s like seeing the same tired nasty joke being told over and over and over again.

Double Eagle, boston college c/o ’97 and ’06, returns to write this edition of The Opposing View.

Call me Mr. Andersen.

This week I heard the sound of inevitability. All season long, I kept saying our stretch run was through a brutal schedule. All season long I urged people to restrain the enthusiasm, enjoy the victories, but not to expect to finish strong.

I should have listened to myself. Instead, I followed the white rabbit. I convinced myself we were going to take one out of two last week, and maybe both. And if we took both then I wouldn’t care that this game scares the crap out of me. And maybe it wouldn’t matter, because we’d beat UNC and Duke and have a hammerlock on first. Instead, we risk falling into fourth place and being perilously close to having to win a game on Thursday to be sure we’re in the dance. And yet, late Saturday night I found myself still hammered, very pissed-off, and more than a little depressed. Why, oh why, didn’t I take the blue pill?

Payback.

This time, it’s for real.

I send greetings from the land of towering pines, pretty women, barbeque, and Carolina Blue skies to my fellow ACCer’s! I suppose I should also call you fellow ABDer’s as well. For many years, those of us sporting Carolina Blue have been bombarded with the term ‘ABC’ (Anybody But Carolina). It is a term used by other ACC fanbases to which we have become accustomed. But what we have always known is this: that “institution of higher learning” up the road in Durham known as dook is the real embodiment of evil. I mean, come on, their mascot is a blue devil! ABD has always seemed a much more appropriate term. It is pleasing to note how quickly the Hokie Nation has embraced the fervent dislike of all things dook (better known around the Tar Heel State as the University of New Jersey at Durham) in such a short period of time.

My beloved friends from VPI: It is an honor and a pleasure to write this week’s opposing view. I am a lifelong fan of UVa sports and a 1997 graduate of Mr. Jefferson’s University. For the past two+ years I’ve watched the ACC from Boston where I moved to see the Red Sox do the unthinkable in 2004 (shout out to you Wick). In the past few years, I’ve enjoyed your team’s “performance” up close and personal at BC (although I watched last week’s wood-shedding on television). Best of all, I’ve suffered through way too many games at Lame stadium in the past 10 years (although I did enjoy our visit in 1998) so I am happy to provide the very opposing view this week.

But enough about me, onto the game.

Greetings Techies. I am delighted to provide a few morsels of information on BC for your snacking pleasure. The details of my life are quite inconsequential. Very well, where shall I begin? I have BC undergrad and law degrees. So does my wife. My brother and my sister-in-law are both BC graduates. I have four season tickets. I watch a lot of ACC hoops in various states of intoxication. I have a Hoo viewing companion who will apparently provide next week’s Opposing View. We are not good for each other, though we are quite good for the neighborhood packie (Masshole for a package store, which normal people would call a liquor store).

Summarizing BC this year is challenging. We have a consensus all-ACC player in Jared Dudley. We’re third in the ACC standings (and we’ve never finished lower than third in the ACC!). And yet, we are unranked and everyone is waiting for us to fall apart. I don’t blame them. We’re all over the place. In the movie about this season, we’d be played by Robin Williams (four Oscar nominations, three Razzie nominations). We lost to Vermont and Duquesne at home this year. Inconceivable!

Are you ready to get Wreck’d?

Hello Hokies, I’ll be your visiting columnist this week, straight outta GT.

I wasn’t sure how to approach this column, so I thought about how I would talk about this game with one of my Hokie buddies. My favorite Frenemy went to VT and graduated in 2003, I graduated GT at the same time.
