BREAKING NEWS: Hokies get early start on 2031 recruiting class

Tech Hoops fans, please welcome the newest member of the family, Lil Niemo; all 9 pounds, 1 ounce of him! Dad, mom and the Hokies’ first commit for the 2031 recruiting class are happy, healthy and doing well. Also, Niemo wanted me to let know that he wrote the previews for the next two games in the labor and delivery wing.

New Commenting System (everybody calm down)

During the next 24 hours, you’ll notice a change to how you leave comments on TechHoops.com. Before you start grabbing the pitchforks and torches, hear us out.

We’re switching from WordPress’s built-in commenting platform (old and busted) to Disqus (new hotness).

First and foremost, you don’t have to give your real names and you don’t have to create a new account. You can still post anonymously, or using you handles under the old system. Just like you did with the WordPress commenting system, you’ll need to provide a name (real or imagined) and an email address (which you had to do before anyway). Your email address is not displayed to the public. I created a test post using a separate email address from my Disqus account and only the name I provide, “Cope”, was displayed.

From that point on, presumably, you’ll be able to keep track of all of your posts using that name and email address.

However, if you’re not shy about using your real name, you also have the option to use Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or an existing Disqus account, to login and submit your comments.

Additionally, you can share any comments or thread of comments on Twitter, Facebook, or via a link.

Give it a fair shake and if after a while you absolutely hate it, we’ll acquiesce and revert to WordPress (old and busted). Deal?

(God, I can’t WAIT to read the comments below. Wild Turkey at the ready.)

Facebook integration and issues – we’re listening!

Earlier today we implemented an easier-to-use Facebook/Wordpress integration. You can share and send our stories using your Facebook account, if you so choose.

We also implemented a Facebook commenting system, but did not intend for it to replace our old system, which would allow for anonymous posts. Apparently, it’s an all or nothing with Facebook. Shocking, right?

So, while Ricky Program Killer Stokes overstayed his welcome, we’ve already given Facebook’s commenting system the boot. We know you like your creative handles and anonymity, so have at it!

Welcome Hard Times Cafe!

Hard Times CafeWe are very excited to announce Hard Times Cafe as our newest sponsor. Hard Times Cafe has been a dining staple of the Metro D.C. area since 1980. From their legendary chili mac to their grilled wings, Hard Times Cafe offers a variety of delicious dishes. In 2005, Hard Times Cafe was named one of the top 10 places in the country for a bowl of chili. They have 16 locations across Northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland. As a former Arlington resident, I miss the Clarendon location. You can’t get that type of chili in Charlottesville.

Speaking of the Clarendon location, Niemo is hosting a TechHoops.com viewing party this Saturday night for the Hokies game against penn state. Come on out and support the Hokies and our newest sponsor, Hard Times Cafe!

New to TechHoops.com …

We’ve implemented a few new bells and whistles on the site for the ’08-09 season. Check them out:

  • Looking for the TV listings for each game? Click the View Schedule/Results link in the left sidebar, just under the ’08-09 Schedule heading
  • We want to know more about what you think of Tech basketball. So each week, we will be running a poll to check the pulse of Hardcore Hokie basketball fans. The latest poll will always be in the left sidebar. You can see the results of the old polls here.
  • Looking for more photos of Niemo’s arm-curling? We’ve added a mini-photo gallery in the right column. If you don’t see Niemo’s feats of strength at first, then click the refresh button. Not only will you be rewarded with arm-curl photos, it will help our traffic numbers. ;)
  • Are you still hungry for more Tech basketball news? No problem. We’ve got you covered with Hoop News, which is located in the left sidebar. Hoop News is an uber-rss feed of Hokie basketball articles from around the world wide web.
  • Are you on Twitter? TechHoops.com is. We will be using Twitter to not only broadcast links to every new article, but also to give Hardcore Hokie Basketball fans updates during Virginia Tech basketball games. Our latest updates will always be in the left sidebar of TechHoops.com, but you can follow us with a Twitter account at http://twitter.com/techhoops.

We will continue to improve the site as we grow. Feedback is always welcome, and remember all of this is free. This is not a paid site, and will never be one. We pride ourselves in providing you with the most Tech basketball coverage in the world.

Happy Birthday Tech Hoops!

It’s hard to believe, but TechHoops.com launched one year ago today. I can’t believe it has grown up so quickly. I could write a long essay about the first year, but I am not going to bore you. You are here to read about Tech basketball. However, it’s the awards season in the world of entertainment. So, going with that theme, I do want to thank some folks.

Tech Hoops.com was founded by Virginia Tech alums who live in Arlington, Charlottesville, and Richmond.

TechHoops.com launched on January 19, 2007, but it has been in the works for over a year. It just took the carolina game to get us off our butts and do it.

The opinions reflected on this site are the opinions of the author of that post/comment only, and not the opinions of all the Founders, Columnists, and Sponsors of TechHoops.com.

We would like to thank everyone who has visited this site, read the posts, and commented. In addition, we thank all of our guest columnists for taking the time and effort to provide content.

This site is in no way affiliated with Virginia Tech, the Atlantic Coast Conference or the NCAA. This site offers free, independent, opinionated coverage of the Hokies.

Q’s favorite Virginia Tech basketball memory is his own graceful leap over the ridiculously tall wall behind the basket as time expired after this season’s unc game, but Deron Washington’s leap over Greg Paulus at duke is a close second.

Q considers himself lucky that he was rejected by uva three years ago.

The Wild Hokie Club!

The Hokies experienced their worst season since the ricky "program bomb" stokes era. Sure, it would have been easy to quit on you, but did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? HELL NO!

And we do it for free! But, just like NPR, we rely on the generosity of our loyal fans to help keep this humble Hokie website alive. That being said, see how you can help TechHoops.com make it to 10 years!

Jon King, Ben Floyd and Dan Rickenbach all got in on the action and we encourage all TechHoops heads to do the same.

Any donation amount earns you a spot in our Wild Hokie Club. We'll even give you a shout out on Twitter and Facebook. We may even let you get armcurled by Niemo.

So join the TechHoops.com Wild Hokie Club today!
