Senior Moments | Chris Tucker

Every day this week, will look back at the career’s of each one of the five VT seniors. These men have led us from our only Big East Tournament appearance, to our second ACC Tourney bye in three seasons.

Let’s start with the guys we don’t have much to say about, and finish with the guys we cannot stop talking about…

Chris Tucker | Forward | 6’6″ | 220 lb. | Fincastle, VA

Chris is one of two Hokie seniors from the state of Virginia, growing up just about 45 miles from the Virginia Tech campus in Fincastle, VA. He graduated from Lord Botetourt High School, where he averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds a game and was 2nd-team AP AA All-State his final year. Chris then played at Fork Union Military Academy for a year in hopes of landing a Division I scholarship. He averaged 11.5 points and seven rebounds in his only season at FUMA.

Tucker decided to walk-on at Virginia Tech after his time at FUMA. Despite not being on scholarship, Chris began playing right away and played in VT’s first game his freshman year. He would only appear in nine games that first season (2003-04), but has appeared in 20 plus games ever since. Tucker saw the most action of his career last year when he appeared in 28 of the 30 games and averaged almost 10 minutes per game. This year, with the addition of Lewis Witcher and the increase play of Cheick Diakite, Chris is only averaging five minutes per game.

Recap | Hokies 73 miami 57

The 2006-07 Hokie basketball season has been a roller coaster ride, full of surprises. Thankfully, today’s game against the canes was not a surprise. Virginia Tech handled a pesky miami team 73-57 behind the senior leadership of Jamon Gordon, Coleman Collins, and Zabian Dowdell.

The Hokies appeared out of rhythm on the offensive side in the first half. VT was not getting many second-chance shots as the canes dominated the glass for the first 18 minutes. Even with the issues on offense, the Hokies led 21-15 with 8:19 left in the half. But miami answered with a 17-4 run and led 32-25 after a four point play by Jack McClinton. During that stretch, the Hokies looked lost beneath the boards (missed box-outs and poor defense), and were at their worst on the offensive side. With only 2:34 left to go until halftime, it was the critical point of the game.

Recap | n.c. state 81 Hokies 56

Nobody could have beaten the wolfpack today.

Not florida, carolina, ohio state, wisconsin, ucla, or any other college basketball team.

What can you do when your opponent shoots 67% from the field, including 73% from behind the arc? You can only hope you don’t lose by 53 like Nebraska did against Kansas yesterday.

In Game Commentary | @ n.c. state

I’ll be doing In Game Commentary for today’s game since TV coverage is limited.

Second Half:
4:13 Gavin Grant sinks another guarded 3 at the shot clock buzzer. This In Game Commentary is over!

Quit calling time outs! I am running out of things to type.

5:11 Will Seth get a T? This is a good game for one.

Recap | Hokies 81 #4 unc 80 (OT)

I am seriously having a hard time collecting myself to write this recap. What a ballgame. I emailed The Team (that’s the team) earlier this morning that losing by less than 10 would be impressive. This is exactly why Niemo writes the previews. Every game by this team surprises me.

What surprises me is how we won. Compare the stats from tonight to the W one month ago.

Rebounds 1/13 2/13
Virginia Tech 28 43
unc 42 45

This time, it’s for real.

I send greetings from the land of towering pines, pretty women, barbeque, and Carolina Blue skies to my fellow ACCer’s! I suppose I should also call you fellow ABDer’s as well. For many years, those of us sporting Carolina Blue have been bombarded with the term ‘ABC’ (Anybody But Carolina). It is a term used by other ACC fanbases to which we have become accustomed. But what we have always known is this: that “institution of higher learning” up the road in Durham known as dook is the real embodiment of evil. I mean, come on, their mascot is a blue devil! ABD has always seemed a much more appropriate term. It is pleasing to note how quickly the Hokie Nation has embraced the fervent dislike of all things dook (better known around the Tar Heel State as the University of New Jersey at Durham) in such a short period of time.

Recap | Virginia Tech 84 uva 57

JUST LIKE FOOTBALL! … clap-clap clap-clap-clap … JUST LIKE FOOTBALL! (I loved hearing that from the Student Section)

I will state the obvious first. This was a much-needed, extremely sweet victory over arch-rival virginia. Who would have thought that Virginia Tech would beat the first-place hoos with only 5 points from Zabian Dowdell? Not this Hokie.

Recap | boston college 80 Virginia Tech 59

Thank goodness for the upcoming week off. What a week it was … after 2 straight road wins, honors from the ACC and Dukie V, the Hokies lay an egg. Time to regroup. That confidence that most fans had on Monday (including yours truly) has turned into concern. True, if we hold serve at home, the Hokies should be dancing, but that is no longer a given. Those hated wahoos come to town on Saturday, and it will not be easy as the hoos are coming off 5 (probably 6, after tonight) straight ACC wins. But we will save that for this coming week … back to the bc game.

The Hokies hit the road for their second straight acc away game. They will head to the ATL to face the georgia tech yellow jackets in 9,191 seat alexander memorial coliseum. VT is just 4-5 away from the Cassell this year, but 2-1 on the road in acc play. This is VT’s fourth straight game against a team coming off a loss, but the jackets are unbeaten at home this year (12-0). The game will pit experience (VT) against youth (ga tech). It will feature a perimeter oriented attack (the Hokies) against a potent and powerful inside game (the jackets).

Are you ready to get Wreck’d?

Hello Hokies, I’ll be your visiting columnist this week, straight outta GT.

I wasn’t sure how to approach this column, so I thought about how I would talk about this game with one of my Hokie buddies. My favorite Frenemy went to VT and graduated in 2003, I graduated GT at the same time.

Recap | Virginia Tech 92 miami 85

The 24th ranked Hokies picked up their second ACC road victory tonight in Coral Gables against the Canes, 92 to 85. Zabian Dowdell and Deron Washington led the effort, scoring 53 of the Hokies 92 points. Tonight’s game was completely different from Sunday night. Lots more offense (obviously), and much less physical, however plenty of fouls.

In Game Commentary | Virginia Tech @ miami

(Writing as the Game Transpires)

Waiting on BC-F$U to end …

Ok, there is no one at the Bank United Center tonight

15:44 Tech 9 the u 2
I will be p*ssed if we don’t win this one. From what I have seen already, we SHOULD win this game.

11:38 Tech 17 the u 4
We definitely look fresh tonight. Surprised to see Chris Tucker get some action this early, and he proved that he deserved it through his hustle (as usual). Diakite looking good again. Adjusted one u shot down low and I really like that jumper (I know he missed it, but still it looked good). Keep it up Hokies so I can relax in the 2nd half.

Preview | Virginia Tech @ miami | DirecTV 659 and XM 192

Records: VT 14-5 (4-1 ACC), um 9-11 (2-4 ACC)

VT gets the proverbial scheduling screw-job from the ACC on this game. Forty-eight hours after playing at home on Sunday night, the Hokies have to return to the court at the farthest possible away destination in the ACC: Miami (maybe Boston is farther but you get my point). VT will have little time to prepare, but the good thing is this is the worst team in the ACC, and they’ve has lost their last three games by 22 (duke), 19 (bc), and 19 (fsu).

Recap | Hokies 67 md 64

What many were calling a must win for md, this one was just as important to Tech. md and Tech will probably be fighting for an NCAA bid with other ACC teams at the end of the year, so we needed this one. After a sloppy start, the game was pretty tight for most of the first half. Tech held its biggest lead of the half at 19-14 after a pair of Nigel Munson free throws with 10:02 left. Cheick Diakite was a spark off the bench in the first half as well, sinking a couple key jumpers on the baseline and swatting a few more at the other end. However, md pulled off a run at the end of the half to take the lead until the Hokies took it back at halftime, 34-33.

Virginia Tech-md (In) Game Comments

(Written as the game unfolds)

First Half

15:53 md 6 Tech 4
A little flat out of the gates. BTW, md has won 8 of last 10 against Tech.

10:02 Tech 17 md 14
Nice freshman mistake by Vasquez with that shot clock violation.
We are looking better, but the pace does seem to bode well for md right now (I hate agreeing with the announcers, especially Fox announcers) . However, I thought the pace of the Carolina game was not good either.
