3 Nigel Munson

Freshman | Point Guard | 6’0″ | 175 lbs. | Washington, DC

Nigel comes from the fabled DeMatha High School program in Hyattsville, MD. Munson helped lead the Stags (Billy Hite’s high school) to a 34-1 record his senior year and a #4 ranking in USA Today. Nigel comes to Tech known as a tremendous passer and ball handler with great court vision, and is the first true point guard Greenberg has brought in. He was a four-star recruit and #16 point guard according to Scout.com. Nigel also is a good shooter, shooting almost 50% on three’s and over 90% on free throws in high school. He averaged 17 points and 7.5 assists as a senior.

Nigel has shown that he can run the point at times this season, but has looked like a freshman at others. He tends to pick up his dribble too far from the basket on offense. Munson needs to make sure he knows where he’s going with the ball first. He has shown he is not afraid to stroke the ball from distance and has averaged better than one three-point attempt per game despite limited minutes. He is hitting close to 40% of his three’s. Nigel has already gained Greenberg’s trust as a free throw shooter, in evidence by the fact Seth put Nigel in to shoot the two free throws with VT down by one at unc with 30 seconds to go. He hit one of two but is 5/6 on the season.

On defense, Nigel has looked slow at times in man defense. He has been beaten off the dribble by quick guards. The Hokie defense could look a lot different next year with A.D. and Nigel out there, two guys who do not have any where near the quick hands Dowdell and Gordon had. This could create blocks for our inside guys… hopefully.

Greatest Game: Nigel had solid back-to-back games in December against seton hall and campbell. He scored double-digits in both with two three-pointers and three assists in each game. He also had 10 points with two three’s and three assists in the win at home against unc. Munson played less than 20 minutes in all three of those games, making his numbers more impressive. But let’s hope his best game is ahead of him. He’s a reeeeal Munson (Kingpin joke).
