2011 Recruit Stats and News

Updated as of February 26th, 2011 – Hargrave sits at 24-0 on the season while Norcom is 26-1 and playing for the Virginia AAA Eastern Region Championship on Monday night at 8 PM.  Dorian Finney-Smith was recently named the Eastern District Player of the Year.

Note: This page will be updated semi-regularly to keep you aware of what VT’s four signees for 2011 are doing.  Three are at Hargrave playing on the post-grad team even though they are seniors (Rankin, Brown, and Barksdale) and I will include their stats together, the other (Finney-Smith) is at Norcom HS in Portsmouth, VA.

News/Stats from newest to oldest:

  • 2/26 – Norcom 54, Kellam 53 – Eastern Region Semis – The Greyhounds narrowly pull out a win in a match-up of the top two teams in the state and punched their ticket for the Virginia AAA State Tournament.  Norcom will look to repeat as state champs, but first they’d like to lock up the Eastern Region title on Monday against Phoebus.  Dorian Finney-Smith hit two clutch free throws to put the Greyhounds up 54-50 late.  A Kellam 3-pointer and a Norcom turnover gave Kellam a chance at the win, but the inbounds passed turned into a loose ball that ran out the clock.  It was Kellam’s first loss of the season while Norcom improved to 26-1.  Dorian had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds.
  • 2/24 – Norcom 69, Oscar Smith 48 – Eastern Region Quarters – Dorian Finney-Smith totaled 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Greyhounds to the Eastern Region semi-finals.  He drilled one 3-pointer in the contest.
  • 2/21 – Norcom 66, Salem 45 – Eastern Region First Round – Finney-Smith scored 15 points including a 3-pointer in the Greyhounds win.
  • 2/18 – Norcom 71, Booker T. Washington 66 (OT) – Eastern District Championship Game – The Greyhounds pulled out the district title in front of 3,500 fans thanks to 20 points, 16 rebounds, and 8 blocks from Dorian Finney-Smith!  The win avenged Norcom’s only loss of the season.
  • 2/15 – Hargrave 120, unc JV 76 – Barksdale had a team high 23 points and 8 rebounds.  Rankin just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 assists.  Hargrave is 24-0.
  • 2/15 – Norcom 50, Granby 34 – Eastern District Semis – Finney-Smith scored 18 points, including 12 in the final quarter, to help the Greyhounds pull away.
  • 2/12 – Hargrave 88, Norfolk Christian 75 – Hargrave and the three Hokies took down Norfolk Christian, featuring unc 5-star signee James McAdoo (Norcom had beaten them earlier in the year).  Barksdale got yet another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Rankin scored 10 and dished out 6 assists.
  • 2/8 – Hargrave 79, Fishburne Military Academy 50 – C.J. Barksdale racked up a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Marquis Rankin and Robert Brown each reached double figures with 10 points.
  • 2/8 – Norcom 92, Churchland 44 – DFS scored 20 and hit one 3-pointer in the blowout.
  • 2/5 – Hargrave 87, Massanutten Military School 73 – Hargrave was actually somewhat challenged for a change.  C.J. Barksdale went for 16 points and collected 8 rebounds.  Robert Brown scored 15 and pilfered 3 steals.  Hargrave went to 21-0.
  • 2/4 – Norcom 78, Norview 68 – Finney-Smith tallied 31 points, including two 3-pointers in the Greyhounds win.  He had five 3-pointers for the week (he wasn’t hitting more than one or two per week up to this point this season).
  • 2/3 – Hargrave 99, lynchburg college 40 – Barksdale had a game high 18 points, while also grabbing 5 rebounds.  Marquis Rankin spread the ball around well, getting 7 assists.
  • 2/1 – Hargrave 83, St. John’s NW Military Academy 73 – It looks weird to not see Hargrave win by 50, but they were tested in this game.  Barksdale led Hargrave with 24 points and 8 rebounds.  Robert Brown had 15 points and 5 assists.
  • 2/1 – Norcom 96, Lake Taylor 52 – The Greyhounds sunk Lake Taylor, leading 51-23 at the half.  Dorian had 20 points in limited action.  He showed good range in this game, knocking down three 3-pointers.
  • 1/29 – Norcom 71, Dematha 57 – Dorian Finney-Smith put 18 points, including a rare 3-pointer, on the Stags in their dominating win. The Greyhounds, ranked #4 in the latest ESPN Rise Poll, rebounded on Saturday to defeat the national power Dematha Stags 71-57. Norcom seems at their best in big games, having beaten Dematha, Findlay Prep, and Word of God among others. Pretty good for a public school.
  • 1/28 – Booker T. Washington 59, Norcom 54 – The Greyhounds lost for the first time in 25 games, dropping to 17-1 on the season.  Dorian had a huge game though with 21 points and 16 rebounds.
  • 1/22 – Hargrave 108, guilford tech community college 71 – C.J. Barksdale scored 17 points and snagged 8 boards.  Dude is a rebound machine.  Robert Brown added 15 points.
  • 1/21 – #6 (nationally) Norcom 76, Granby 56 – DFS dropped 32 points, which I believe is a season high, on the overmatched Comets.  Dorian even hit a pair of 3-pointers, which is rare for him.
  • 1/19 – Hargrave 127, pfeiffer university 59 – Barksdale chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds.  Rankin scored 12 and dished out 9 assists.  Robert Brown tallied 13 points.
  • 1/18 – #6 Norcom 73, Maury 60 – Finney-Smith scored 21.
  • 1/16 – Hargrave 78, St. Thomas More School 58 – C.J. Barksdale got 16 points and 7 rebounds and Robert Brown scored 11 and had 3 assists to lead Hargrave to a win at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA.
  • 1/14 – #6 Norcom 62, Wilson 47 – Dorian Finney-Smith exploded for 26 points.
  • 1/13 – Hargrave 161, virginia western community college 47 (OUCH!  A 114 point win!) – Robert Brown had 20 points and 6 deflections in the beat-down.
  • 1/11 – #6 Norcom 68, Churchland 40 – There was no hangover from the huge win on Saturday as the Greyhounds laid the lumber to Churchland to go to 14-0.  Dorian had 16 in the win.
  • 1/9 – Hargrave 92, randolph college 50 – Robert Brown exploded for 24 points (and 3 steals) to lead the post-grad team. C.J. Barksdale had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.   Hargrave is 12-0.
  • 1/8 – Norcom 68, #4/5 (nationally) Findlay Prep (NV) 66 – Dorian Finney-Smith’s Norcom Greyhounds moved to 13-0 with a stunning (well, stunning to everyone but the Greyhounds) win over Findlay Prep of Nevada by a 68-66 score on Saturday.  Findlay Prep is a national powerhouse that came into this game ranked #4 in the ESPN Rise rankings and #5 in USA Today.  Norcom sat at #23 in the ESPN Rise rankings but wasn’t ranked in the USA Today top 25 or the south region top 10.  That will change in the next rankings.  Expect the defending Virginia AAA State Champs led by the reigning Player of the Year (DFS) to skyrocket up the charts. Dorian scored just 8 points in this game (he battled foul trouble), but calmly knocked down two free throws to break a 66-66 tie with less than 10 seconds left and give the Greyhounds their 23rd straight victory.  While he didn’t have a huge game and had bad luck finishing inside, he has been dominant most of the season and has seen his stock rise.  Dave Telep of ESPN Recruiting even talked about DFS as a possible McDonald’s All-American earlier last week. Norcom led big early, took a 12-point lead to the half, and increased it to 17 in the third quarter.  But Findlay Prep battled back and took leads of as much as 5 with 4 minutes left, before Norcom rallied and pulled out the win. Findlay Prep features Myck Kabongo — a 5-star texas signee (#24 overall in Rivals), Nick Johnson — an arizona signee and #40 in the Rivals’ rankings, and Amir Garrett — who is going to st. john’s and is #51 on the Rivals’ list.  That’s three top 50-ish players on a private school power that can recruit players, but they were no match for the Commonwealth’s best team, a public school team no less.
  • 1/7 – Norcom 73, Norview 56 – The Greyhounds dominated their tune-up for Findlay Prep and moved to 12-0 in this Eastern District game.  Dorian Finney-Smith had 15 points.
  • 1/6 – Norcom 69, Norfolk Christian 67 – The Norcom Greyhounds stayed undefeated with a 69-67 win over Norfolk Christian, which features unc signee James McAdoo (son of the former LA Laker).  Norcom, the defending Virginia AAA State Champs, are ranked 13th in the nation by Rivals.com and 23rd in the country by ESPN Rise (rise.espn.com).  Norfolk Christian was ranked 65th in the land by Rivals.com.  Then you have the two stars.  Dorian, last year’s Virginia AAA Player of the Year, is ranked 37th in the Class of 2011 by Rivals, #27 on ESPN, and 26th on Scout.com.  McAdoo, also a forward, is a 5-star and 8th ranked recruit by Rivals, #5 on ESPN.com, and 7th on Scout.com.  McAdoo led all scorers with 24 while Finney-Smith got a double-double with 16 points (6/13 from the field) and 10 rebounds.  Norcom is now 11-0 and have won 21 straight games.  The Greyhounds play Norview tonight, then face #3 ranked (according to ESPN Rise) Findley Prep from Nevada on Saturday at Wilson High School.
  • 12/27 – Norcom 64, Word of God (Raleigh – John Wall’s alma mater) 62 (OT) – GSK Invitational – Norcom won the GSK behind that “beast” named Dorian Finney-Smith.  He had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks in the opening round win over Word of God.  Norcom had to overcome a 20 point halftime deficit in the game.
  • 12/11 – Hargrave 81, Fork Union 59 – The Tigers capture the Fork Union Invitational Tournament crown with another easy victory.  Robert Brown led Hargrave in scoring and rebounds, with 20 and 7 respectively.
  • 12/11 – Norcom 71, Gwynn Park (MD) 42 – Finney-Smith tallied 13 points, including a three, and 4/6 from the line, as the Greyhounds smashed Gwynn Park in the National HS Hoops Festival at DeMatha HS in Maryland.
  • 12/10 – Norcom 57, Maury 51 – Dorian Finney-Smith scored 12 points.  The Greyhounds are 2-0 and head to an elite game at Dematha on Saturday night against Gwynn Park in the National HS Hoops Festival.
  • 12/10 – Hargrave 138, St. Ingatios Prep 71 – Woodshed beating!  C.J. Barksdale scores 15 in this blowout in the Fork Union Invitational Tournament.
  • 12/7 – Hargrave 96, Rockingham CC 60 – Barksdale dominates again with 20 points and 6 rebounds.  Hargrave is 9-0.
  • 12/5 – Hargrave 108, VT JV 72 – The future Hokie trio got a chance to play at Virginia Tech.  Barksdale had 18 points, Rankin scored 13 and deflected 7 passes.
  • 12/3 – Norcom 60, Wilson 37 – DFS scores 14 points for the Greyhounds.
  • 11/20 – Hargrave 86, New Hampton 75 (National Prep Showcase in New Haven, CT) – Brown leads the Tigers with 25 points and 15 rebounds.  Rankin chips in 17 points.  Barksdale adds 11 points and 7 boards.
  • 11/19 – Hargrave 115, South Kent 105 (National Prep Showcase in New Haven, CT) – Brown and Rankin each score 19, while Marquis adds 11 assists and Brown deflects 5 more passes.  Barksdale has another solid game with 17 points and 8 rebounds.
  • 11/16 – Hargrave 109, Roanoke College 75 – Barksdale explodes for 42 points and 13 rebounds! Brown is finding himself, contributing 14 points and tipping 3 more passes.
  • 11/13 – Hargrave 88, Louisburg College 78 – Barksdale stuffs the stat sheet with 16 points and 7 rebounds (he seems to get 7 every game).  Brown reaches double digits with 10 points and 5 deflections on defense (Greenberg loves that stat).
  • 11/12 – Hargrave 100, Essex CC 86 – Robert Brown and Barksdale get 20 points each.  Barksdale adds a team high 13 rebounds.  Brown contributes 4 assists.
  • 11/9 – Hargrave 89, Patrick Henry CC 55 – Barksdale scores 20 and grabs 7 boards.  Rankin tallies 8 points and dishes a team high 9 assists.
  • 11/4 – Hargrave 115, Summit Christian Academy 77 – C.J. Barksdale had 16 points and a team high 7 rebounds.  Marquis Rank pilfered 6 steals.

The Hokies experienced their worst season since the ricky "program bomb" stokes era. Sure, it would have been easy to quit on you, but did we quit when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? HELL NO!
